About Dr Anneke
Hi! I'm Anneke, a qualified teacher based in Devon, but teaching online. I hold a PhD in Education, an MA in Religious Studies (Distinction), and a BA in Humanities with Philosophy (First)—so these subjects are where my deepest academic roots are.
I trained as a secondary RE teacher at the University of Exeter and spent time teaching in British schools before moving into doctoral research. My PhD focused specifically on Religious Education in English schools, and during that time, I co-authored a student textbook and a CPD handbook for teachers and teacher educators in this field. All of which means I understand these subjects from every angle: as a student, a teacher, a researcher, and an examiner of ideas.
Whether you're working towards your GCSEs, preparing for A-level exams, navigating a university module, or simply exploring philosophy and ethics because the questions fascinate you, I'd love to work with you.
My teaching adapts to each learner. Sometimes that means working through ethical frameworks step by step. Sometimes it's Socratic dialogue, close reading of source texts, or unpicking an exam question together. What stays constant is that your goals shape the sessions. I meet you wherever you are, and we go from there.
I've spent more than a decade teaching online, so remote lessons feel completely natural to me. And what I love most about one-to-one tuition is the relationship it makes possible. When there's trust, there's space to ask the questions that feel risky in a classroom—and those are usually the ones that lead to the best thinking.

So, what would a Philosophy, RS or Ethics lesson with me actually look like?
That depends entirely on you. Every learner is different, and I always start by finding out where you are, where you want to go, and what kind of learning feels right for you. From there, we build a plan together.
Here's what I can help you with:
—Philosophy of Religion: arguments for the existence of God, the problem of evil, religious language, miracles
—Ethics: natural law, situation ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, applied ethical issues
—Study of Religion: beliefs, practices, sources of authority, and contemporary debates across major traditions
—Critical thinking and argument: how to construct, evaluate, and challenge philosophical arguments
—Exam technique: structuring essays, using key terminology with precision, and understanding what examiners are looking for (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC)
—University-level support: essay writing skills, seminar preparation, and engaging critically with philosophical and theological texts
These are subjects where knowing the content will only get you so far. What really counts is learning to think through complex ideas with clarity and confidence—and that's exactly where one-to-one tuition makes the biggest difference. If you've ever left a lesson or lecture feeling like you almost understood something, that's the gap I help you close.
As a personal learning coach, I also help students develop study and research skills they can carry into every subject—and every stage of life.
Interested? Get in touch and let's have a chat about what you'd like to achieve. I'd love to hear from you!

I started working with Dr Anneke during my A-levels because I needed help with my English — academic writing, research skills, how to put my ideas together clearly. She gave me the confidence to apply to university, which I never thought I'd do. I ended up studying Social Sciences, and we carried on working together through my first two years — she gave me feedback on my writing and helped me sharpen my research skills. I honestly don't think I'd have made it that far without her.
As a German software developer working with international colleagues, I needed to improve my English skills. Anneke is a wonderful EFL tutor who stands out for her remarkably structured approach to teaching. Her clear, step-by-step system makes even the most challenging aspects of English easy to grasp and follow.
I never imagined I could learn a foreign language so thoroughly until I worked with her.
Her personality is patient, reliable, and professional, making every lesson a great pleasure.
I wholeheartedly recommend her.Ich bin Frau Dr. Schmidt unglaublich dankbar! Meine Tochter hat sich in den letzten Montaten enorm verbessert und freut sich sogar jetzt auf die Schule! Ein großes Geschenk!
