About Yulia
I'm a Computer Science student at UCD with a long-standing enthusiasm for maths! From puzzling over the formulas at the back of my homework diary in primary school to teaching Applied Maths to classmates in secondary, I've always enjoyed exploring and explaining mathematical concepts.
My approach:
I focus on understanding first, and memorization to support the understanding¹.
I use creative explanations and make use of metaphors and relevant examples.
I share effective study strategies often overlooked in schools. I aim to make math engaging and less intimidating.
I work well with students who are actively engaged and keen to understand, regardless of their current level. Together, we'll tackle your maths challenges!
¹ Sometimes what holds people back is not knowing or not remembering the definition of a term, and then they're stuck in solving the question, whereas if they studied key terms like in the science subjects, they'd ace it!

My goal is to help you reach those satisfying "Oh, that's why!" moments of understanding.
We'll move at your pace. I will meet you where you're at and tailor the content to your level and learning preferences.
I always try to make lessons interactive, so you can stay engaged and so I can tell how well you're following along.
In our math sessions, we'll:
Focus on understanding concepts
Figure out what insights you're missing that are holding you back
Use metaphors, analogies, and visualizations to make the concepts more solid
Use memory techniques to help you remember anything it would be helpful to memorize
I can also point you to cool free resources that might help your learning - explanations, tools to play around with to get a better sense of something, etcetera.
Finally, I would love to teach you scientifically supported study techniques, if you like! I am very passionate about the science of learning, and feel frustrated that many schools ignore the newest findings on this. If you're up for it, I'll tell you techniques to study that might be more effort up front, but will help you get ahead in class and secure whatever grade you're looking for. We can even apply them in our sessions :)
