About Charmaine
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Biology, as well as a Master of Science in Molecular Science with a concentration in Microbiology from Florida A&M University.
I began college intending to become a forensic pathologist; however, I discovered a love of teaching after finding a professor who was able to help me understand complicated concepts in general chemistry. He engaged me and made me laugh by using unorthodox metaphors to help us relate to the content. Later in graduate school, I used similar techniques when I taught biology lab for non-majors. I had 2 students come to me saying my class helped them decide to change their major to nursing and biology. After that, I knew I had a talent and passion for teaching.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy indulging my inner child. I will always be a gamer. My favorite platform is Playstation and I currently have 10 platinum trophies, including God of War 4 and God of War Ragnarok, Ghost of Tsushima and Resident Evil 7.
Other than that, I am a mother of a wonderful teenager. I'm an anime nerd and a foodie. I enjoy travelling and have been to Costa Rica 5 times! I enjoy life in many ways and each experience helps me relate science topics to students in ways that promote mastery.

When my students were asked to describe my best qualities in order to create a word cloud for Teacher Appreciation Week, the most repeated words were: fun, relatable, energetic, organized and patient. When evaluated during lessons by administrators, I am constantly told my lessons help them understands they were confused about when they were in school
I am able to assess what confuses my students and then relate it using real world scenarios. My lessons are not lectures. They are engaging conversations where we discuss topics, use visuals and simulations and classroom tested techniques to help you master content.
A typical 45 min-1 hr session could be devoted to homework help, project design or test preparation. I also have a talent for helping students develop study and executive functioning skills.
In order to maximize our time, I usually prefer notice of what my tutee would like to cover. For example, if you wish to have homework help in biology, message me saying
"Ms. Thompson, today we learned about Punnett squares and I need help completing 5 problems about codominant traits."
This helps me prepare multiples examples and find helpful visuals, if necessary.
