About DONALD
I have mentored thousands of students, culinary arts, marketing and hospitality professionals to reach their goals and beyond. I find tremendous satisfaction and my purpose fulfilled in helping others.
Education is more than textbooks and exams; it's a dynamic and interactive experience aimed at the practical application of knowledge. As an instructor, I strive to cultivate an inclusive and respectful environment encouraging students to expand their learning, engage proactively and collaboratively, and effectively leverage modern technology. I guide learners in recognizing the real-world relevance of their studies and equip them with tools and networks for career success.
As a mentor, I believe it is of utmost importance that the students can identify their strengths and personality types in identifying a career path that resonates with their own goals, values and beliefs. That every step should be a step forward towards becoming their best self, no matter how varied or long the route. That each day is a gift of contribution to a better future and world.
To me, education also involves developing a well-rounded perspective on life. Hence, my teaching incorporates essential societal themes, such as wellbeing, respectful teamwork, transparency, ethics, morals, values (especially the values for family and education), technological advancements, inclusivity, accessibility, sustainability, diversity, social justice, Indigenous Reconciliation, ecological consciousness, and responsibility.
In my classroom, every student is valued, respected, and considered. I firmly believe in equality and diversity and am committed to providing an accessible learning environment for all. I enjoy changing up the teaching methods using technology with a variety of apps and simulations with a solid grounding in a quadruple bottom-line philosophy where profit, people, planet and social justice are all emphasized. By integrating these principles into the lessons, I aim to prepare students for a world that is increasingly interconnected and diverse.
My teaching methods for adult learners recognize and build upon their prior knowledge and experience, creating relevance by ensuring that the learning outcome is practical and applicable to their personal or professional life and fosters self-direction as well as autonomy. Active participation is encouraged through strategies like group discussions, case studies, research, and problem-solving, ensuring individual and group assignments are managed in a respectful environment where each of their opinions is valued. I use immediate constructive feedback in various ways to create a 360-degree overview where I am sharing marking with students who can evaluate each other and myself.
I have always been accommodating in the learning schedule through flexible or asynchronous learning options recognizing students have family and work obligations. I adjust strategies based on each adult learner's unique needs, learning style and circumstances, and I strongly empathize with persons with disabilities.
In summary, my philosophy of education is based on setting the example of being supportive in creating an atmosphere of inclusivity, continuous learning, practical application, and the development of a broad perspective on life's various aspects that encourages students to scaffold their learning and skills proactively and collaboratively continuously using up-to-date technology. Through this approach, learners can understand the practical relevance of their studies and gain the necessary toolbox of skills and contacts to succeed in each of their chosen career paths.
