About James
I have lived in Japan, China, and Zimbabwe. I taught Chinese university students for a number of years, creating writing and listening lessons, both at Shenzhen University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong/Shenzhen. In Japan, I taught at a private language school that trained interpreters and translators. In Zimbabwe, I was an English Language Fellow in the U.S. State Department's EFL program. I am also a writer who has published academic papers and fiction. A novel of mine, "The Opium Addict," set in Meiji era Japan, is forthcoming later in 2022. I can, therefore, help a student with creative writing, both fiction and nonfiction, particularly journalism and editorial writing. My hobbies are golf, sailing, hiking, riding a motorcycle, and swimming. You can read more about me on my website, (concealed information)

I write my own lessons, which are based on the language acquisition theories of professors who have taught EFL/ESL. The best way to improve is to focus on input language, primarily reading and listening, and output tasks that require the student to use the language in the input materials. In this way, students learn naturally. There is no need for grammar drills. There is a lot of material on the internet to use to create materials, and if a student is a university student, or wants to learn the basics of academic writing, I can use those materials to create lessons which meet their needs.
