About Shannon
With over 19 years of combined experience in adult education instruction and administration, I have dedicated my career to empowering students and educators alike. My journey in education spans more than 17 years as an adult education instructor, during which I have had the privilege of teaching a diverse range of subjects, including reading through language arts, social studies, science, and math. This experience has given me a profound understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by students. My teaching portfolio is diverse, encompassing online, in-person and asynchronous learning. This flexibility has allowed me to reach students in various learning environments, ensuring that they receive a quality education regardless of the mode of delivery. My commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging learning atmosphere has been a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. In addition to my instructional roles, I have served as an instructional lead and administrator. In these capacities, I have been responsible for providing professional development to fellow instructors, helping them to enhance their teaching practices and improve student outcomes. My efforts in professional development are driven by a passion for continuous improvement and a belief in the power of education to transform lives. Academically, I hold a degree in Organizational Management, which has equipped me with the skills to effectively manage educational programs and lead teams. Furthermore, I have earned a certificate in design thinking, allowing me to approach educational challenges with creativity and innovation. My commitment to professional growth is also reflected in my work as a published author, where I have shared insights and strategies on self-improvement. Currently, I am a contract instructor for a private institute, where I have the opportunity to work with youth aged 16 to 24. This role allows me to apply my extensive experience and expertise to inspire and guide the next generation of learners. I take great pride in helping these young individuals navigate their educational journeys and achieve their full potential. My professional journey is a testament to my dedication to education and my belief in its transformative power. I am committed to inspiring confidence in my students, establishing my legitimacy as an educator, and reassuring them of my professionalism. Through my work, I strive to make a lasting impact on the lives of those I teach and to contribute to the advancement of the educational field.

My approach to teaching is rooted in the principles of andragogy, recognizing that adults have unique learning needs and motivations. I focus on creating a learner-centered environment where students are encouraged to take an active role in their education. Here are some key aspects of my teaching method:
Contextual Learning: I relate the material to real-life situations and practical applications, making the content relevant and meaningful.
Scaffolding: I provide structured support to help learners build on their existing knowledge and skills, gradually reducing assistance as they become more confident.
Interactive and Collaborative Activities: I incorporate group discussions, peer teaching, and hands-on activities to promote engagement and deepen understanding.
Differentiated Instruction: I tailor lessons to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of my students, providing additional resources or modified assignments as needed.
Formative Assessment and Feedback: I use ongoing assessments to gauge understanding and provide constructive feedback, helping students identify areas for improvement and celebrate progress.
A typical lesson plan in one of my classes includes the following elements:
Introduction: A brief overview of the day's objectives and how they connect to the overall course goals.
Warm-Up Activity: An engaging activity or discussion question to activate prior knowledge and prepare students for the lesson.
Presentation of New Material: Introduction of new concepts through a variety of methods, including lectures, videos, and readings.
Guided Practice: Opportunities for students to apply new knowledge through exercises, discussions, or group work, with guidance and support.
Independent Practice: Assignments or activities for students to complete on their own, reinforcing the day's learning.
Review and Reflection: A summary of key points and a reflection activity to encourage students to think about what they learned and how they can apply it.
Assessment: A quick quiz or activity to assess understanding and provide feedback.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to connect with learners and understand their unique challenges and motivations. My extensive experience across different subjects and formats allows me to adapt my teaching methods to best meet the needs of my students. I prioritize building a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and empowered to succeed.
My lessons are designed for learners at various levels of education, including:
School Age: 5th - 12th grade
High School Equivalency (HSE) Students: Those preparing for exams like the GED, HiSET, or TASC.
English Language Learners (ELLs): Students improving their language skills for better integration into their communities or workplaces.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Students: Individuals seeking to enhance their skills for career advancement or a career change.
Lifelong Learners: Adults pursuing personal enrichment or new knowledge in subjects like social studies, science, math, and language arts.
My goal is to provide flexible and accessible education that meets the specific needs and goals of each learner.
