About Michael
Growing up, I played a lot of music. When I wasn’t playing piano and clarinet in orchestras and ensembles, I’d be writing down my favorite songs and adapting them for piano or my school band.
I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Cognitive Science, so I like to figure out how people learn. To me, every new student is a challenge, and an opportunity to refine my method.

I want to help you be a better musician. I can give you the tools to analyze the music you like, and to translate your musical ideas from your head to your instrument.
I believe good musicianship starts with having a solid grasp of the fundamentals of music: melody, harmony, and rhythm.
If these concepts scare you, don’t worry. We’ll start at your level.
“But wait!” you might ask. “Can’t I learn this all on Youtube?”
Have you ever watched a Youtube lesson, and then the next day, retained almost nothing? Videos are great resources, but ultimately skill is learned through engagement. That’s where I can help.
I want to offer you a framework that helps keep you engaged with music theory:
1. A method that builds on itself to reinforce the skills and ideas you’ve already learned
2. Personalized challenges: as you improve, I’ll teach you concepts and assign you exercises catered to your level. I want you to be challenged but not defeated.
3. A chance to make your own connections: when introducing new material, I’ll encourage you to make connections to music you like. When you’re engaged on a personal level, learning becomes discovering your taste.
Learning these skills takes a lot of practice. No musician has ever learned to play without drill. That’s where I come in. My job is to make the drill as engaging and effective as possible. So join me in leveling up your musical ear!

I have been patiently instructed by Michael for many years. He is VERY smart but keeps things simple and easy to understand. I know he's always focused on having me understand things at the level that is required. Sometimes that means digging into why things need to be understood in a certain way and other times we can skip that. I wish all the teachers I've had in the past took this approach.
