About Kevin
Hi, I'm Kevin! I'm an Alberta-certified teacher with a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama, both from the University of Calgary. For the past two years, I have taught English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Drama in a live classroom setting, working with students across a wide range of grade levels and learning needs.
I got into tutoring because I genuinely love watching a student's confidence grow the moment a concept finally clicks. Whether it is structuring a strong essay, preparing for a PAT or Diploma exam, or simply building comfort with reading and writing, I focus on breaking things down into clear, manageable steps so progress feels achievable rather than overwhelming.
My teaching style is patient, structured, and encouraging. I hold high expectations, but I also believe learning should feel supportive, not stressful. I bring real classroom experience, a strong understanding of the Alberta curriculum, and a genuine passion for helping students find their voice, both on the page and out loud.
I look forward to working with you and helping you reach your goals with confidence.

My Teaching Methodology and Techniques
My approach is built around outcome-based assessment and active engagement rather than passive review. I believe students learn best when they understand exactly what skill they are building and why it matters, so every session begins by identifying a clear, specific learning target. I draw heavily on inquiry-based questioning, breaking down complex concepts like literary analysis or persuasive writing into concrete, manageable steps students can practice and internalize. As a Drama-trained educator, I also bring an experiential approach to teaching, using discussion, modeling, and guided practice rather than lecture-style instruction, which keeps students genuinely engaged rather than simply absorbing information.
A Typical Lesson
Each session follows a structured but flexible format: roughly 40 minutes of focused skill-building on a specific concept, such as paragraph structure, literary devices, or exam-style response writing, followed by 20 minutes of applied practice or personalized homework support. For PAT and Diploma exam preparation specifically, I incorporate timed practice, past exam questions, and targeted feedback on writing structure and clarity. Every session ends with a clear takeaway so students and parents can see tangible progress week to week, not just general review.
What Sets Me Apart
I am an Alberta-certified teacher with a BEd and BFA from the University of Calgary, and I have spent the past two years teaching English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Drama in a live classroom setting, not just tutoring part-time. That means I bring genuine curriculum expertise, a deep understanding of the Alberta Programs of Study, and real experience preparing students for PATs and Diploma exams specifically. I also bring a performance and communication background that helps students build confidence expressing ideas clearly, both in writing and verbally, which is often the missing piece in traditional academic support.
Who My Lessons Are For
I work primarily with students in Grades 7 through 12, particularly those preparing for Grade 9 PATs or Grade 12 English Diploma exams, as well as students looking to strengthen essay writing, reading comprehension, and literary analysis skills more broadly. I am equally comfortable supporting students who are struggling and need foundational support, and stronger students who want to refine their writing toward top marks. I also welcome students bridging into upgrading programs or returning to complete high school English requirements as adult learners.
