About Tehani

As a senior at Otterbein University, I have immersed myself in my studies as an Allied Health major with a pre-med concentration in physical therapy. My academic journey has been marked by a passion for writing, which has led me to pen multiple essays throughout my college career and, more recently, to publish my first book. This achievement is a testament to my dedication and love for storytelling. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am actively involved in campus life through the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), where I serve as the secretary. In this role, I have the privilege of helping to coordinate events and initiatives that encourage leadership development among my peers. As a mentor for first-year students, I am passionate about supporting their transition into college life, offering guidance and sharing experiences to help them navigate their academic journeys. I also volunteer at Mount Carmel, where I engage with the community and gain hands-on experience in a healthcare setting. Additionally, I work in the Disability Services department at the university, supporting fellow students in their academic endeavors and contributing to an inclusive environment. My commitment to helping others drives my work and enhances my perspective in the field. Moreover, I've had the honor of receiving offers to work at the University Writing Center, which would allow me to further develop my writing skills while assisting my peers in their writing journeys. Balancing these roles has enriched my college experience, and I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead in both my professional and creative ventures.

My approach as a tutor centers around understanding each student’s unique learning style and challenges. I use direct instruction, guided practice, and collaborative learning to enhance understanding and skill development. I emphasize the importance of brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising, ensuring students grasp each stage of the writing process. Additionally, I incorporate real-world examples and relevant literature to illustrate concepts, making lessons engaging and relatable.

I also leverage technology through tools like Google Docs for collaborative editing and resources like Grammarly for real-time feedback on writing mechanics. This blend of traditional and modern techniques caters to diverse learning preferences, promoting confidence in writing capabilities.

Lesson Plan:
1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Quick review of the previous lesson or writing concepts.
- Discuss learning objectives for the day.

2. Focused Instruction (15-20 minutes):
- Teach specific essay writing techniques (e.g., thesis statement creation, structure of an argument, use of evidence).
- Provide examples and dissect model essays to highlight effective strategies.

3. Guided Practice (20-25 minutes):
- Students practice drafting a section of their essay based on the lesson (e.g., writing an introduction or developing a body paragraph).
- Offer immediate feedback and support as they work through challenges.

4. Independent Practice (15-20 minutes):
- Assign students to write a rough draft or a specific section of an essay as homework, applying what they’ve learned.

5. Closing
- Recap key takeaways.
- Address any remaining questions and preview the next lesson.

What differentiates me as a tutor is my focus on fostering a growth mindset in my students. I encourage them to view mistakes as learning opportunities and celebrate small successes throughout their writing journey. My background in both academic writing and creative expression allows me to provide a well-rounded perspective that respects the rigors of formal writing while also encouraging personal voice and style. Moreover, my ability to adapt to various learning paces and provide personalized feedback ensures that each student receives the support they need.

My essay writing lessons are tailored for high school and college students, ranging from those in introductory writing courses to advanced literature students. I cater to different proficiency levels, whether they are struggling with essay structure or refining more advanced analytical writing skills.

In summary, my tutoring approach combines structured lessons with flexibility, ensuring each student develops strong writing skills tailored to their individual needs.
