About Gabriel
Hi, I'm Gabe, a first-year student at the Institute of Archaeology at UCL. I have a lengthy work experience history, in retail and hospitality, but my favourite experience was working with young people (13-18 year olds) as part of the Foundation for Education Development. In a field so closely linked to education, I realised how hard it is to succeed in the system when you've been dealt a bad hand: especially subjects such as English, which rely on multiple hours of practice and study of extracurricular information to keep up with the lessons. Ultimately, I aim to provide students with fairly-priced lessons with fun, personalised learning programmes to enable the realisation of their full potential. I strongly believe in the philosophy of education being in the reins of the learner! In the future, I aim to be a secondary-school teacher myself, and I hope this experience of tutoring will help me realise these goals.

With my history as a prior Project Co-Ordinator on the Foundation for Education Development's Learners' Council (which enabled me to learn from disadvantaged 13-18 year olds' experiences of education), I employ other young people's suggestions in my personalised teaching methodology. We will begin with a free assessment lesson, where I will assess the learner's comprehension abilities and establish their personal learning pathway. In following lessons, my aim will be to spend 30-45 minutes establishing habits that will enable learners to quickly identify, break down, and solve complex literature problems. With the remaining 15-30 minutes, we will focus on topic-specific contexts to enrich their understanding of set texts and broaden their applicable knowledge. We will further develop learning resources such as flashcards and mind-maps to enable effective revision outside of lessons. I will aim to prepare students for exams and general success in literature-based subjects in a similar vein to my preparation, which enabled me to reach three A*s in A-level and eight grade 9s at GCSE. I am fully DBS-checked and familiar with safeguarding protocols from previous experiences.
