About Clare
I am an MA Honours graduate in History of Art from The University of St Andrews, with more than 20 years' experience in the international art, design and architecture worlds, first as a magazine editor in London and Paris, and since 2014 curating high-profile exhibition projects for London Design Festival at the V&A, London Design Biennale, English Heritage, Roca London & Barcelona Galleries, and Milan Design Week. I am also the author of many feature articles and interviews on art and design, and my book on German artist Wolfgang Laib, 'A Journey', was published by Edition Cantz. My most recent exhibition was 'Paper Clouds', the Japan Pavilion at Somerset House (2025).
I love my subject, and love teaching it, providing my students with an understanding that is not just limited to academic writings and exam papers, and can inspire for life. I'm happy to offer a trial class.
My experience has led me to work with all ages from 8 years, and I take a very interdisciplinary approach in my work and teaching, with the aim to inspire and instil a visual curiosity that enriches life hugely.

I love my subject, and have also given History of Art classes and Exhibition Talks & Lectures to young people and adults since 2018, including at Royal College of Art in 2025.
I am offering one-to-one and small group classes in History of Art, and am also happy to mentor A Level and BA students, with one hour or 90 minute tutoring classes. Museum and gallery visits are also possible, to supplement and support learning. "An Introduction to History of Art" is offered.
I take an academic but also a creative approach, and having interviewed many artists and architects, I also have an insight into the reality of making art. History of Art is a subject that encompasses history, aesthetics, philosophy, perception and often the interaction with other artistic disciplines. I am particularly passionate about 20th-century art, but also have a strong background in Early Renaissance art, having studied with Professor Martin Kemp, Emeritus Professor at Oxford.

We couldn't be happier with the tutoring our son received from Clare. He came to her lacking confidence in English Literature, but her lessons made a real difference — particularly in how he approaches structuring his answers.
Clare has a brilliant way of breaking down plays and texts into manageable sections, making even the more complex works feel accessible. She introduced him to a range of writing techniques that he was able to apply directly in his GCSE exams, and we genuinely believe her guidance was reflected in his results.
What stood out most was how she tailored each session to where he was struggling, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. He left every lesson with more clarity and, just as importantly, more confidence.
We'd highly recommend Clare to any parent looking for an English Literature tutor who really knows her subject and knows how to get the best out of her students.Dear Clare,
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help and support with Elaine’s English preparation.
Your guidance, particularly with her writing, has made such a positive difference. You always encouraged Elaine to be imaginative and creative in her writing, and helped her develop the confidence to express her own ideas. I especially appreciated how you encouraged her to combine her knowledge and her love of music in her writing, which really helped her develop a unique style and enjoy the process more.
With your support and encouragement, Elaine received offers for 2024 entry from St Paul’s Girls’ School, Tiffin Girls’ School, and Lady Eleanor Holles School. We are incredibly grateful for everything you have done to help her achieve this.
Thank you again for your dedication, patience, and encouragement throughout the journey.
Best wishes,
Ying (Elaine’s mum)Clare has been a wonderful support for my son to prepare for his IGCSE. She perfectly understood his needs and gave him all the confidence he was missing. She is a really good teacher: professional, reliable, and extremely friendly. I highly recommend her.
Clare is an incredibly talented writer and tutor, and really brings out genuine interest, and a balance between technical writing skill and creativity in students. She is kind, trustworthy, and highly experienced, and I would not hesitate to recommend her.
