English Grammar: From Basic → Advanced --- Level 1: Basic Grammar Foundations 1. Parts of Speech (8 main categories): Noun – book, teacher, happiness Pronoun – he, she, they Verb – run, is, eat Adjective – big, beautiful Adverb – quickly, always Preposition – in, on, at, under Conjunction – and, but, because Interjection – wow!, oh! --- 2. Sentence Structure Subject + Verb + Object (SVO) → She eats an apple. Kinds of sentences: Declarative (I like coffee.) Interrogative (Do you like coffee?) Imperative (Please sit down.) Exclamatory (What a beautiful day!) --- 3. Articles & Determiners a / an / the a cat, an apple, the moon Quantifiers → some, many, few, much, several --- 4. Active & Passive Voice Formula: Object + be + past participle (+ by subject) They built the bridge. → The bridge was built by them. --- 7. Conditional Sentences Type Formula Example Zero If + present, present If you heat water, it boils. First If + present, will + verb If it rains, I’ll stay home. Second If + past, would + verb If I had money, I would travel. Third If + past perfect, would have + past participle If I had studied, I would have passed. Mixed If + past perfect, would + verb If I had slept early, I wouldn’t be tired now. --- 8. Reported (Indirect) Speech She said, “I am tired.” → She said she was tired. He said, “I will go.” → He said he would go. --- 9. Question Forms Yes/No questions: Do you like it? WH- questions: Where do you live? Tag questions: You’re coming, aren’t you? --- 10. Gerunds & Infinitives Gerund (verb+ing) acts like a noun → I enjoy swimming. Infinitive (to + verb) → I want to swim. --- 11. Relative Clauses who, which, that, whose, where, when The man who called you is my uncle. --- 13. Noun Clauses, Adjective Clauses, Adverb Clauses Noun clause: What you said is true. Adjective clause: The book that I bought is great. Adverb clause: I’ll go when I finish work. --- 14. Inversion & Emphasis Never have I seen such beauty. Only after the meeting did he realize the truth. --- 15. Ellipsis & Substitution I can play the guitar, and she can (play it) too. Would you like tea or coffee? – Coffee, please. --- 16.
