About Selome
Hi! I'm a sophomore at UT Austin, and I'd love to help you or your child with writing!
I received a full ride merit-based scholarship to UT through the Liberal Arts Honors program, largely because of my writing. I have a 3. 85 GPA overall, and a 4.0 within my department. I am an editor for one prominent student publication at UT, and the editor-in-chief of another. I also held a paid copywriting internship last summer. This year, I was admitted to a 4-week writing intensive program at New York University.
I'm especially enthusiastic about tutoring high school students with college application essays. I graduated in the top 4% of my class at a 6A high school, and received offers from NYU and Carnegie Mellon with scholarships. Don't hesitate to reach out with any writing-related questions!

In 2018, I was hired by Liberal Arts Honors as a "Writing Fellow." Through this fellowship, I gave detailed writing feedback to 14 honors freshmen on their weekly essays. My students greatly improved over the semester, and I learned a lot from them — namely, how to teach writing.
I believe that for a successful writing lesson, the most important factor is clear dialogue between student and tutor/mentor. I assess my students' first pieces, parsing out the strengths and weaknesses. Instead of just telling them what I like and how they should improve, I gauge their own opinions first. What matters to each individual writer? How do I help them prioritize the part of their voice most important to them? How do we take their voice and message and communicate them as effectively as possible?
From there, I let them know what my opinions about their strengths and weaknesses are, and ask if they understand why certain techniques are strong and others aren't. This step is where writers begin to realize what their subconscious habits are, and what intentional habits aren't working as well as they thought. As we repeated this process over time, my students could write their same stunning ideas from before, but with concision, specificity, and elegance they didn't realize they were capable of.
