About Stephan

Every student learns differently, so I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach (an older model of education). Before diving into content, I take the time to understand each student's strengths, challenges, interests, and goals. I genuinely want to know who they are as a person. Building trust is the foundation of my teaching because students are more willing to take risks, ask questions, and grow when they feel supported. Their progress not only as a student, but as a whole person finding themselves, is so important to me.

As a current mentor working with multiple students, I intentionally weave mentorship into every tutoring relationship. A typical lesson begins with a quick personal check-in, followed by a review of previous learning before introducing new skills through guided instruction, discussion, and meaningful practice. Rather than simply giving students answers, I ask probing questions that encourage critical thinking and help them discover solutions on their own.

I teach with a warm, caring, and relationship-centered approach while maintaining high and rigorous expectations. My students know they are deeply supported, but they also know and expect that I will challenge them to grow. Throughout each session, I provide immediate feedback, celebrate progress (super important!), and adjust my instruction based on each student's needs. Ultimately, my goal is to make every session both joyful and rigorous.

I specialize in English Language Arts for students in grades 5–12, including reading comprehension, essay writing, literary analysis, grammar, vocabulary, and creative writing. I also help students strengthen organization, study habits, and academic confidence. Those are skills that support success across every subject.

What sets me apart is that I bring the perspective of an award-winning classroom teacher, championship-winning coach, and dedicated mentor. Over six years of teaching middle school English, I've learned that lasting growth comes from combining high expectations with genuine relationships. My goal isn't simply to improve grades or test scores; it's to help students become confident, independent learners who believe in their own abilities.

Whether your student needs extra support, enrichment, or preparation for the next school year, I'll create a personalized learning experience designed to help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
