About Heather

I wasn't always an award-winning journalist who graduated summa cum laude from MSU Denver, I was a mom, an aunt, sister and daughter. While each of those roles taught me some they did not teach me to be a student and I was a high school dropout, not meant to return to college as an adult and there certainly isn't a handbook when you sign up. For me, it was a crash course with roadblocks and people believing I couldn't, but then I not only achieved my original goals, I exceeded them by earning and maintaining a 4.0 GPA, earning enough money in scholarships to pay for the final two years of my education and being accepted into the prestigious journalism graduate program at Columbia University in New York City—an honor only 5.5% acceptance rate achieve. For me, the icing on the cake was when my mentor from MSU Denver hired me to edit his novel. My offer to you: the advantage of learning my study skills that led to exceeding my initial goals minus the bumps in the road which led to many sleepless nights, pointless tears and offenses taken when they shouldn't have been.

About the lesson

One skill I picked up in my time at MSU Denver was how to study. The lessons will include how to prioritize information from lectures and notes and textbooks, even if you are interested in the content, remembering the content upon completion is a challenge for many students. I will show you how to follow along with the instructor while comprehending the text. Additionally, students will learn how to create functional flashcards, both online and physical. Students will be encouraged through discussion to learn class material so when testing season comes, they will use the same techniques from our sessions to successfully recall information from memory. Along with some other tips and tricks I have learned along the way, I will teach students how to prepare to be successful a week before and one day before their exam. First and foremost, I am a compassionate teacher who understands circumstances make goals difficult to achieve and leave students discouraged and afraid to take risks. Regardless of stature, students should have the opportunity to learn, free of judgment. So, allow me to teach you to be a student, even when circumstances are stacked against you. ☆ Don't you hate it when you finally finish reading a chapter only to realize you don't recall a single word you read? Learn to focus: Notetaking is an essential skill to harness in educational endeavors. I will show you how to prioritize the information and figure out your teachers are expecting you to learn. Creating concise, yet informative, flashcards for both independent and buddy study sessions are a fantastic resource. Finally, there is a method for the week before, the day before and the day of the exam and I will pass those secrets along to you. If you're reading this, you are already ahead of the game even if you feel like you're not, getting help is a massive step in successful learning. Don't take it from me, I only kept a 4.0 in college and didn't pay after my second year from earning scholarships.
