About Louis

I'm Louis, an experienced and passionate tutor specialising in Religious Studies (GCSE and A Level). For GCSE students, I focus on mastering 4, 6, and 12-mark questions, while at A Level, I guide students to excel in long-form essays (40 marks for OCR).

I have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge for master's courses related to Religion and Philosophy, and I am currently doing a 2 year MPhil specialising in Theology and the Philosophy of Religion at Oxford.

Having faced similar challenges during my own studies, I understand how difficult it can be to meet examiners' expectations without clear guidance on structuring and arguing answers. Many students are taught content but not the critical skills needed for top marks. My approach focuses on breaking down what examiners want and showing students how to craft model answers, helping you to unlock your potential quickly.

Find out more about Louis

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've been fascinated by philosophy and religion from a young age, spending my teenage years exploring countless books on these subjects. My love for tutoring stems from a genuine passion for teaching and a desire to inspire the same sense of wonder and curiosity in my students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Philosophy and Religious Studies, with a focus on the Philosophy of Religion. This field explores profound questions about God's existence, nature, and the philosophical implications that arise from answers to these questions.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

As a Christian, Christ is my principal teacher. Philosophy has also been an immense source of wisdom, and my favorite philosopher is Plato!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs enthusiasm for the subject, emotional intelligence, and a genuine commitment to their students' success.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During the second year of my degree, I put a tremendous amount of effort into my coursework, expecting top marks. To my dismay, most essays came back with grades between 61-69, while lower-effort essays scored better. Feeling disheartened and uncertain about where I was going wrong, I took time in the summer to analyse my approach. I realized it wasn't just about working harder but working smarter. By reformulating my essay strategies, my final-year grades improved significantly, averaging 74 and peaking at 80. This experience taught me resilience and the value of strategic thinking.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge I faced was understanding why my writing wasn't achieving higher marks. Overcoming this required a detailed self-assessment of my essays and adapting my approach to meet academic expectations.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm passionate about learning and helping others discover the joy of learning!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof is my enthusiasm for education and my subjects. I aim to share this passion and help you develop a love for these topics as well!
