About Nicole

Although I have a college degree, I find the hardest job to study for is parenting. As a mom of three, I learned early on that none of them were my academic-loving clones and had different learning styles. One hated school entirely, the other is Math-orientated but has a weak English foundation, and my littlest likes Math and Writing. I understood after plenty of late-night hours trying to get one concept down, I had to learn how each learns and processes the information. Then I came up with strategies to teach the concepts they were weak in and show how they work together. For example, if a word has a weird spelling I would use rhyming words to help spell the word. This is the strategy I use with my students. Learn what they are weak in and find ways for them to understand the concepts taught.

About the lesson

I teach students from K-8th. My lessons cover pronunciation of the word, phonetics sounding out sounds for spelling, learning the different syllables and blends, categorizing the words in the proper part of speech, and using the words in a sentence. Then practice reading and sight words. If the student is feeling empowered to go further we might practice paragraphs with the sentences they made. A quick assessment or questionnaire will be used to figure out where to start from and see if the student likes learning or not, and how they like to learn or process information. Next, I use worksheets I either found or created for that lesson. If a child dislikes using worksheets then a game like grammar bingo can be created to teach the lesson. Each lesson is custom-made and focused on the learning style of the student.
