About Ryan
I graduated from Balwyn High School in 2023, with an ATAR of 98.85, and was part of the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Class. This enabled me to take VCE English Language 3/4 a year earlier than is normally the case. I received the school's Subject Award for English Language in 2022, having been internally named Rank 1, having averaged 97% across Unit 3 and 100% across Unit 4.
As a result, I ended up with a raw score of 48 in English Language. I am currently completing a Bachelor's of Commerce at the University of Melbourne, looking to major in Economics and Finance. I took VCE Economics 3/4 as a Year 11, as well, receiving a raw study score of 43. While I will primarily tutor VCE English Language, if you are looking for some tutoring for VCE Economics, then I'd be more than happy to talk.
Outside of academics, I really enjoy my sports (mainly soccer and cricket), as well as my music. I primarily play saxophone (alto, but have regularly played the baritone for the school's stage band), but I also have recently been inspired to teach myself piano (after many years of neglect!)
For me, the greatest teachers were always those who were willing to go that extra mile, to understand the learning styles and thinking processes of each individual student. They have dedicated more time than is technically required of them, to ensure that the most key concepts have been understood, and their students can feel confident to go and apply them in the pressure moments. As such, these traits are ones that I look to emulate in my own lessons, because I also hold the same passion and desire to share my knowledge with others. One of the greatest joys, personally, is seeing another person's face light up when they finally understand the concepts you have been teaching them. Seeing such enlightenment, is what drives me to keep teaching.

For success in English Language, it is pivotal that the foundations across metalanguage, analytical commentary and essay writing techniques are consolidated. I will continue to reinforce these most basic and fundamental, but necessary skills, for students to succeed in their internal SACs and their final end-of-year exams.
Students will be provided with excellent resources that I personally used during my time as a student, as well as more recent and contemporary evidence relevant to this year's study design, that I have compiled myself, that they can use in their own essays.
Typical lesson times will be around an hour and a half, but I am willing to spend more time at the end of the lesson, free of charge, to ensure that my students leave each lesson confident that they have mastered the concepts that have been taught in the lesson.
As I completed English Language 3/4 in 2022 as a Year 11 (a year before I completed Year 12 in 2023), I was able to offer English Language peer-mentoring and tutoring to my fellow year 12's in 2023. I voluntarily answered questions regarding uses of metalanguage in written work and also provided more targeted and thorough feedback upon spending more time reading their answers. I was able to help point them towards my own SACs and practice pieces, and help identify what specific areas of my own work they could incorporate in their own, to help ensure they could get more marks.
My lessons are for Year 11s and 12s, but if younger students from Year 10 are certain that they wish to take English Language in VCE, then I am more than happy to provide them guidance and background information regarding what to expect.
Note: I also am willing to run English lessons for Prep-Year 10. In these lessons, the primary focus will be on ensuring that the student can excel in their English Year Level, and enable them to move ahead of their curriculum.
