About Séamus

I’m a musician and tutor with a passion for helping students understand the deeper language of music. My teaching combines practical musicianship with clear, approachable theory so that students can apply what they learn directly to the music they play and enjoy.

Alongside teaching, I work as a performing musician with a background in Irish traditional and folk music, which has given me a strong appreciation for learning music by ear, understanding melody, and developing musical feel. At the same time, I have a strong interest in jazz and improvisation, which influences the way I approach harmony, rhythm, and creative expression.

Bringing these influences together allows me to offer students a well-rounded musical perspective, balancing the tradition and storytelling of folk music with the creativity and freedom of jazz. My goal is to make theory feel like a practical and empowering tool rather than something abstract or intimidating.

I teach students from complete beginners to developing musicians, creating a relaxed and supportive learning environment where curiosity and creativity are encouraged. Ultimately, I aim to help students gain the confidence and understanding they need to explore music more deeply and enjoy playing for years to come.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is practical, supportive, and tailored to each student’s goals. I focus on helping students understand how music works so they can apply what they learn directly to their instrument and the music they enjoy playing. Lessons combine theory, listening, and practical exercises to build a strong musical foundation while keeping the process engaging and enjoyable.

I aim to make complex ideas simple and approachable, breaking concepts down step by step and connecting them to real musical examples. Students are encouraged to ask questions, experiment, and develop confidence in their musical understanding and creativity.

Lessons typically last 45–60 minutes, depending on the student’s preference and level. During lessons we usually cover a mix of technique, theory, musical application, and practical exercises that can be developed further through guided practice between sessions.

I have experience teaching beginner to intermediate students, including those who are completely new to music as well as self-taught musicians looking to deepen their understanding. Lessons are suitable for teenagers and adults, and are designed to adapt to each student’s pace and interests.

My background as a working musician and educator informs my teaching, allowing me to connect theory with real musical situations such as learning songs, improvisation, and playing with other musicians.
