About Nia
Hello! My name is Nia and I hold a bachelor's degree in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing from UC Berkeley. I have been an academic tutor for nearly ten years and have taught middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. I started my teaching journey when I was in high school, providing in-person, one-on-one tutoring to middle schoolers in algebra, English, and science. Then, while at university, I primarily tutored high schoolers in English essay writing, eventually transitioning to remote instruction during the COVID pandemic. Post-pandemic I resumed in-person instruction when I joined the Student Learning Center at UC Berkeley and did peer tutoring there, helping college students with their academic essays. Since then, I do freelance tutoring and my focus is on remote essay coaching for high school and college students.

For my teaching approach, I combine my writing and storytelling skills, guiding students in producing well-rounded essays. I prioritize building students' confidence through brainstorming sessions so they can express their ideas clearly and draw informative conclusions. As education is not a one-size-fits-all model, I personalize my teaching style according to each student, working to support their individual needs (ADHD especially). I have experience with the UC admissions system, specializing in personal insight question (PIQ) prep, coaching high school applicants and transfer students in meaningful, impact-focused writing. This includes choosing appropriate PIQ prompts, brainstorming insightful answers, structural planning, and essay editing; all to communicate each student's unique voice concisely and achieve positive results. I guide my students through appropriate research techniques so they can discern legitimate sources and cite academic journals correctly. Especially since AI has become a larger issue in the classroom, it is crucial that my students know how to source information properly and spend real time reading and comprehending source materials.

I am an ESL student who needed help with essay writing and wanted to have a bilingual English native speaker who would relate and accommodate to my issues . I met Nia thru a mutual friend who recommended her and started taking lessons with her to improve my essay skills in English. Her warm and flexible approach helped my English skills to a whole new level. Nia was accessible for my schedule and where I struggled she found a way to approach my difficulties in a way that I could understand . She made me see the structure of the English language in a much more understandable way. My writing and vocabulary are now something I use with confidence. I highly recommend her services. Thank you, Nia for all your help !
Nia is so smart and patient, very knowledgeable and helpful in each of our lessons. She really helped me increase my vocabulary and understanding of the language. Highly recommend Nia!
I highly recommend Nia as an English and essay-writing tutor. She is thoughtful, patient, and skilled at helping students organize their ideas and express them clearly. She has a strong understanding of grammar, structure, argument development, and the writing process, but she also knows how to explain these concepts in a supportive and approachable way. High school and college students would be fortunate to have her support!
