About Mar

I’m Mar Gimenez, a music producer, engineer, songwriter, and educator from Spain. I was fortunate to receive the prestigious Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation and Julio Iglesias Presidential Scholarship, which fully covered my studies at Berklee College of Music, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with dual degrees in Music Production and Engineering and Contemporary Writing and Production. As a performer, I had the honor of opening the Person of the Year Gala at the Latin Grammys. As a producer and engineer, I’ve recorded in renowned studios worldwide, including Abbey Road and Real World, and have worked with iconic artists like Celine Dion. I’ve been passionate about teaching for years, working in various schools and offering freelance private lessons to kids and adults in Madrid before moving to the USA. I specialize in the Willems Method of piano instruction and believe in making music education an exciting and engaging experience for all students. When I’m not producing or teaching, I love to sing and write my own music, always exploring new ways to blend creativity and technique in every project.

My lessons are built around the same world-class materials and techniques I was taught at Berklee College of Music – the kind of education that typically costs $60,000 a semester. Whether you're picking up the piano for the first time or you're already experienced, you’ll gain access to this professional-level training at a fraction of the cost. In our classes, you’ll become a well-rounded, holistic musician. To achieve this we’ll focus on four essential pillars of music: - Ear Training: Develop your ability to recognize melodies, harmonies, and rhythms by ear, making you a more intuitive and confident player. - Technique: Build agility, sight-reading skills, and the fundamentals needed to approach any piece with ease. - Improvisation and Composition: Unlock your creativity by learning how to develop your own musical ideas. - Harmony: Understand the "why" behind the music. What sets my lessons apart is that they’re fully personalized to you. If you love Metallica, we’ll use their music as a starting point. If you’re into pop, jazz, or classical, that’s where we’ll begin. With years of experience teaching both kids and adults, I understand how to adapt my methods to suit different learning styles and levels. Whether you prefer online lessons or in-person sessions in Los Angeles, I’ll meet you where you are to help you achieve your goals. This is your chance to experience the methods used at one of the best music schools in the world, but in a way that’s affordable, approachable, and fun. I’ll help you unlock your potential, take your skills to the next level, and make music an exciting and fulfilling part of your life. Let’s get started! :)

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I started piano lessons at age four and learned to read music before I could read words. Music has made me endlessly happy through my studies and now my career. Piano is my instrument of choice because it’s incredibly versatile, both on its own and as a production tool, which is essential in today’s music world.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

It depends on my mood and what I’m doing. For running, Linkin Park. For cooking, I’ll loop Spanish copla or Julio Jaramillo. I go through phases of artist obsessions. I connect deeply with pop because it has no barriers: everyone can join in, and that shared moment gives me goosebumps. In Spain, music is a social event that brings people together. I want to contribute to that as a creator, not just a listener.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most riveting classes are the non-technical ones: improvisation, songwriting, and creativity-driven production. Parts of these can’t be “taught,” but they can be invited. As a teacher and working creator, my job is to spark that curiosity. Scales and Pro Tools shortcuts only take you so far. Fearless creation is what moves you forward in music and in your relationship with yourself as a musician.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I don’t think any instrument can be fully mastered, and that’s the beauty of it. Music is an endless path. It’s less about the destination and more about the journey.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Discipline over mood. Have a plan you can rely on when motivation dips. Consistency is everything.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Bill Evans - for his sensitivity and soul, and to have any conversation he’d offer.
Julia Michaels - to talk songwriting and emotional truth in lyrics.
Max Martin - to dive into production, hooks, and longevity in pop.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I learned a lot through mistakes. In orchestration class, my teacher let me keep errors in my scores so I’d face them in the recording session. I’ll never forget a trumpet player explaining why a line was physically impossible to play. It was embarrassing, but the lesson stuck for life.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I teach with a holistic approach. My background lets me see music as a performer, creator, and technician, and I build exercises that hit all three angles. I’m also an active songwriter and producer, so I bring current industry practices into every lesson.
