About Boris

I am a biologist with a master’s degree in Biology and a strong interdisciplinary background that bridges science, humanities, and languages. My graduate research focused on urban ecology, specifically green roofs and how they benefit soil and ground-dwelling arthropods, and I have a solid foundation in ecology, taxonomy, insects, plants, and environmental science, as well as in molecular and cellular biology when needed. Alongside my scientific training, I was educated in a rigorous humanist school, where I studied philosophy, languages, and classical subjects, which shaped my way of thinking and teaching. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, fluent in French and Italian, and I continue to study other languages such as Chinese and Japanese. I am deeply curious by nature and genuinely passionate about learning and teaching; whether I am studying history, paleontology, anthropology, or music, I approach knowledge as something interconnected. I see myself not only as a tutor, but as a guide who helps students think, explore, and find their own way of understanding the world.

My lessons are structured yet flexible, always adapted to each student’s goals, level, and way of thinking. Whether I am teaching biology, science, math, physics, chemistry, or languages, I focus on helping students understand concepts deeply rather than memorizing information mechanically. I place strong emphasis on reasoning, connections between ideas, and developing the ability to ask the right questions, so students gain confidence and autonomy in their learning. In language lessons, my approach is mainly conversational, integrating grammar naturally while discussing topics that are meaningful and engaging for the student, including culture, history, and everyday life. I have experience working with learners of different ages and backgrounds, including neurodivergent students, and I aim to create a calm, supportive environment where curiosity and confidence can grow. My goal is always the same: to make learning useful, empowering, and intellectually stimulating.

Find out more about Boris

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in Biology and science in general began when I lived close to the beach in Miami, surrounded by lakes and reptiles near Orlando, or going up and down mountains in Argentina. Nature thrilled me and made my curiosity for learning more intense as I grew up.

My interest in private tutoring in particular happened when I had to make a living while I was doing my degree in college. I found individual tutoring, or teaching small groups, very purposeful, dynamic, and gratifying, and also less stressful.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

When I teach Science, I’m fond of delving into math and how it interrelates with other disciplines and topics. Maybe because I find it as an accurate tool to represent and communicate different phenomena, just like another language.

Possibly, what I enjoy a little less is writing about big projects. For example, when I did my thesis, it was very challenging for me.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In my family, there’s sort of a teaching legacy. My parents and my grandfather, in particular, who shared knowledge as a way of life, inspired me. He had this saying I loved, "We go to school to learn how to use the library."
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Trying to follow your own teaching way with devotion, discipline, curiosity, patience, and empathy.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Studying with other people, saying things out loud, or learning out in the field while adding movement can be great ways to assimilate concepts. Try out different approaches to learn things, paths that will lessen your anxiety. Sitting still in a chair for long periods of time can be one of the biggest contributors to losing interest in what you’re learning.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Some of my challenges have been not feeling good enough or ready to teach certain topics, resulting in missed opportunities. Others have to do with publicity.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Learning complex languages is another big passion; I’m fascinated by Chinese and Japanese.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

As I mentioned earlier, teaching is very fulfilling. It’s like watching plants grow, but a step further. It’s very gratifying to see how the teamwork between teacher and student develops into an achievement, a purpose.

I like to generate passion for learning and curiosity in my students.
I consider myself to have a lot of knowledge to share, and can do so in more than one language (so I guess that helps, haha).
