About Abbey
Hi! I'm Abbey, a current PhD student in Biostatistics at UNC Chapel Hill and a proud graduate of Amherst College, where I double-majored in Mathematics and Statistics and was a 2x captain of the Women's Basketball team. I’ve always loved problem-solving and helping others gain confidence in subjects that can feel intimidating at first. With experience as a grader, academic intern, and peer mentor, I’ve supported students in courses like calculus and linear algebra. I especially take pride in tutoring statistics courses -- I genuinely enjoy helping students understand the material and watching things start to click. As a former college athlete, I also understand the importance of balancing academics with other responsibilities, and I bring that same level of discipline, patience, and encouragement to my tutoring. I’m here to help you build both your skills and your confidence, whether you're prepping for an exam, working through coursework, or just trying to stay ahead.

As a tutor, I focus on building strong foundations while meeting students where they are. My approach is personalized, encouraging, and rooted in clear explanations, active practice, and consistent feedback. I aim to create a comfortable learning environment where students feel confident asking questions and exploring challenging concepts.
A typical lesson begins with a quick review of previous material to reinforce retention and identify any lingering confusion. I often incorporate visuals or analogies to make abstract ideas more accessible and emphasize understanding over memorization. At the end of each session, we’ll reflect on progress and set goals for the next lesson.

As a former college athlete and current PhD student in biostatistics, I understand the importance of time management, perseverance, and making complex material feel manageable. I’ve worked with students across different levels—as a grader, academic intern, and peer mentor—so I’m comfortable adapting my approach based on a student’s background and goals.
