About Mariana
Hi, I'm Mariana, a Brazilian teacher, choreographer, architect, and artistic researcher based in Stockholm. I have 5 years of experience teaching Brazilian Portuguese to foreigners in private classes, emphasizing conversation and writing. In addition, I have a master's degree in Choreography from Stockholm University of the Arts (SE) and a bachelor's degree in Architecture and Urbanism from Universidade Mackenzie (BR). One of the main focuses of my academic and artistic research is the investigation of the relationships between the written and spoken languages of Brazilian Portuguese and English, as well as the cultural expressions of Brazilians and Europeans.
Since 2005, I have taught in various contexts, including free classes, workshops, schools, and public projects. I have also collaborated on artistic research projects with Ph.D. candidates Caterina Mora and Marcia Nemer at Stockholm University of the Arts (SE) in 2022 and 2023, respectively. As a dancer and performer, I collaborate with choreographers and artists in Sweden, Portugal, and Brazil.

I have five years of experience as a private Brazilian Portuguese tutor for foreigners. The lessons are conducted in English and can be held online, via webcam, or in person in Stockholm, Sweden. In addition to being fluent in English, I have basic knowledge of French and Spanish and a beginner in Swedish, which can assist in teaching Portuguese to native speakers of those languages.
Throughout my journey as a Portuguese tutor, I have had the opportunity to teach young people and adults, mainly from the United States and European countries such as France, Sweden, and Germany. The students had different objectives for learning the language - for studies, work, and tourism, among others - but shared an interest in visiting or living in Brazil and learning or improving their oral and written communication skills through Brazilian customs and culture.
I organize private lessons according to the needs and goals of each student, seeking a fun and playful way to learn the language, using Brazilian art, culture, customs, and cuisine as resources. The course is adapted to each student's learning style, considering their interests, level, and repertoire. They will practice reading, writing, conversation, and listening comprehension through materials they like and hobbies, such as music, books, TV shows, and movies. Combining different resources, I use grammar books as a basis, literature, and comics.
I can also introduce Brazilians' "non-verbal" language, that is, some characteristics of our body language. Each language is a living and constantly transforming knowledge that reveals how its native speakers think, feel, behave, and move. I use Brazilian culture - music, literature, cinema, visual arts, and dance - to present this cultural richness.
As a native Brazilian who has lived and worked in São Paulo, I can offer various tips for your visit to Brazil. With extensive experience in hosting foreigners, I can help with language in everyday life, how to use transport, informal conversations, local cuisine, slang vocabulary, and recommend events that only a local knows, such as cultural events, shows, parties, as well as exciting places from a historical or nature-rich point of view.
