I have a diploma in Theology, a level 2 ARA Certificate in recreation, bachelor business administration (majoring in Human resource management). I have been giving private tutoring lessons (subjects: recreation and Business) for 5 years now in Rustenburg and Krugersdorp. My teaching method is to figure out where the student is in their educational journey - what they know, where their knowledge stops, what misconceptions or gaps they have, what special interests and insights they have, and what their individual learning styles are like. Also being well aware of what the goals of the tutorials are so that I can focus on that and achieve it within a reasonable time frame, in ways that keep the student engaged and eager to learn. I ask the student to show me how to do a particular problem she or he is trying to solve, or to read a sentence to me, if the subject is reading, and so on. The point here is to see the student in action: how long it takes him or her to complete the task and if he is skipping any steps. By now, I am able to corroborate his teacher’s marks and assessment, and I have seen exactly at what point the student is getting stuck. The aim is for me not become a crutch and for my tutees to be aware at all times that I am not going to do their work. I let them know that they must put forth an effort in order to benefit from tutoring and Insist that they do their assignments, study on their own, and do their own thinking. In general, the less work I do for my tutee, the better. Although it is quicker, easier, and less frustrating to do the work for him/her, it is of little permanent help to the tutee. I prefer to help him or her to learn how to do his or her own work. If I do supply an answer, i make sure that my tutee understands how I arrived at it and make sure I check for retention and understanding of that concept later on in the session.

I excerise patience and flexibility. I do not act annoyed with student's progress or lack thereof and choose to focus on the learning activity. This is because my annoyance may reinforce negative attitudes toward the course and their general ability. I engage him/her in a joint exploration of problems and find that often he or she would be the one talking about 75% of my session. I encourage my tutees to focus on "learning how to learn" and concentrate on developing mental processes and learning strategies rather than on getting the "correct answers" and using rote memorization. I maintain a "professional" attitude and behavior. In cases where i need to do research, i make sure to do it and and get back to my tutees in the next session. My tutees always enjoy finding out that I are human too!
