About Jiayan
Hi, I’m Jiayan, a native Mandarin speaker from China. I am a PRC-qualified lawyer with three years of experience in commercial law, corporate matters, employment law, and dispute resolution. I also hold a master’s degree in International Commercial Law and Arbitration from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
Beyond my legal career, I served as the COO of an early-stage technology company, where I worked on customer development, market research, and product coordination across Chinese and international markets. I am also the licensee and lead organizer of TEDxWangJiang St, where I managed fundraising, speakers, volunteers, vendors, and the complete event production process.
These experiences allow me to help students understand not only Mandarin vocabulary and grammar, but also how people actually communicate in Chinese workplaces, business meetings, negotiations, and everyday life.
I am patient, encouraging, and interested in people from different cultures. I understand that speaking a new language can feel intimidating, so I create a relaxed environment where you can practice, make mistakes, ask questions, and gradually become more confident.

I help professionals, entrepreneurs, and people preparing to live or work in China improve their Mandarin for situations such as:

As a native Mandarin speaker, PRC-qualified lawyer, former startup COO, and TEDx organizer, I can also explain the cultural context behind the language—such as hierarchy, politeness, relationship-building, and indirect communication.
My goal is to help you speak naturally, avoid misunderstandings, and feel more confident communicating in China.
