About Amanda
With 8+ years combined experience as a classroom teacher and tutor, I love each and every one of my students and work tirelessly to meet each of their individual needs. I continually create and modify curriculum to allow each of my students to learn and grow, both personally and academically. I am devoted to the children I work with, aiming always to keep them engaged, inspired, and growing in whatever ways are best for them. I have worked with a variety of students, ages 4-18, including students with ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities, in addition to general education students. I have a calm demeanor that puts my students at ease and I am always ready to answer questions or explain difficult concepts in new ways. I am here for whatever my students need, including homework help, scaffolded support, or learning practice games to increase fluency. I love watching students grow and am always ready to provide feedback on their work.

In my 8 years of experience as a teacher and tutor, and my work with both special education and general education students, I have found that strong teaching and profound learning can be boiled down to a few simple, but essential principles:
1) consistency
2) strong foundational skills
3) carefully scaffolded and student-centered practice
All of these elements are integral to lessons with students of any age. In reading, that might look like foundational skill or sight word fluency practice, targeted word work or grammar practice, and leveled reading passage work. In writing, that might look like spelling pattern or morphology practice, targeted grammar or writing structure skills, and in context writing tasks. In math, that might look like fact fluency practice, target skill practice, and story problem application. Specific activities are always targeted to student levels and needs, of course. With regular sessions and consistent session structure that targets both foundational and new skills, I find that most students make profound growth both in academic success and in confidence.
I have worked with students ages 4 to 18, with the majority of my students being in elementary and middle school. I teach reading, writing, math, and study skills for these age groups. I am passionate about my students and their learning and find that my calm demeanor helps my students to feel safe to do difficult things.
