About Vijaya
I'm an approachable, thorough tutor with over 6+ years of experience teaching in History, Politics, and Law from KS2-3, GCSE and A-Level, right through to postgraduate level. History and politics are my first loves. I studied them up to A-level and at university, where received a first in History and Politics from Oxford. I have broad and extensive knowledge in many fields, including British, European and American history, and I specialised in Middle East and subcontinental politics specifically. However, I’m fascinated by all aspects of the social sciences and historical research – from Chinese or Mexican history to the latest developments in UK or South African politics. I always hope to instil a little of this passion in my students! I also have particular expertise in law, including core GDL and LLB modules. I have an LLM and PhD from Cambridge in International Law, where I received a Distinction and passed my viva with minor corrections. I was a lecturer and supervisor at Cambridge, overseeing dissertations not only in law, but also those overlapping other subjects in the humanities. I am planning to take the bar course and become a barrister. I love helping students achieve their best (I know how daunting exams and revision, especially for broad topics, can be). In addition to history, politics and law, I have assisted students studying English and Geography to get the best marks possible. I've received consistently positive feedback for my supervision at Cambridge, as well as from private tutees. Almost all my students have received A/A*s or Level 7-9 in their exams. I recently helped an undergraduate student at a London university get a distinction in 2 key pieces of coursework as well as their final thesis in politics, for example, and an A-Level student struggling with analysing sources achieve the top band for their written coursework on Irish history. For Oxbridge applicants, I can help students prepare for interviews, subject tests and with their personal statements. I offer editing and proofreading service for essays and major assignments, including coursework and dissertations.

As a tutor, I know that there's no 'one-size fits all' approach to teaching. I tailor my sessions to the immediate and long-term needs of my students - whether they want help with understanding a tricky topic, improving their exam technique, or planning and completing a stellar piece of written work. Depending on the student's temperament, I focus and adapt my lesson style to achieve the outcomes they want. I can help prepare for a dreaded upcoming test, cultivate a passion for a subject beyond standard education, or assist you with your critical thinking and writing skills, instilling good practices that will be hugely helpful in future. For GCSE and A-Level students, I use a one-to-one guided approach that deepens a pupil's understanding of the syllabus and shows them how to apply their knowledge, breaking down complicated ideas step-by-step. I work carefully to mark schemes and exam board requirements, challenging their understanding whilst making my lessons engaging and fun. My aim is to ensure that my students feel capable and prepared, knowing exactly what to do to place themselves in the top band for their assessment objectives. I also want them to enjoy the subject! In my first session, I like to get to know my student. I find out their progress in their studies, style of working and areas for improvement. Discussing examples of their work or preparations for upcoming exams is often a really effective way of understanding the help they may need. Once I have a sense of their strengths and weaknesses, I collaborate with them to draw up a personalised plan of work. I'm also available for my students via text / whatsapp / etc outside tuition hours if they have questions or require assistance. Many previous students remain in touch, which is wonderful - I enjoy being as helpful a resource as I can, and I am always happy to provide a little advice if needed.

Vijaya was an amazing teacher of History for my son's GCSE. In 8 weeks she took him from level 4 in his mocks to 9 in his exam. She is a super intelligent and organised person who clearly will rise to the top of her chosen field.
