About Catherine
Since graduating with a First from Cambridge University, I have spent three years teaching students one-to-one and in small groups in school and education settings.
I first worked in a secondary school as an academic mentor for Y7-10 students reading below their age average. I am trained as a Phonics Fresh Start Tutor. I have now worked for two years teaching English and creative writing to adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.
Alongside this professional experience I have volunteered as a tutor with Zero Gravity, helping students with their university applications. Several of my tutees have already been successful in getting offers from Cambridge University.
I am now applying to do a PGCE in teaching English Literature.

I use our first session as a way of getting to know you as an individual learner so that I can connect our sessions to your goals and interests. For students preparing for an exam or admissions test I then closely read the mark scheme and course syllabus. I connect this content to the individual student's interests outside of the course.
For SEN students, I take a personalised approach and draw on my wealth of experience following SEN teaching methods. I am Fresh Start Phonics trained and skilled in chunking down and scaffolding information. I also understand the importance of using physical and visual props to support learning. I pride myself on taking a creative approach to engaging students in accessing a new topic or building foundational skills.
For students working at GCSE level or above, I like to follow a Cambridge supervision model of learning. I set a short piece of reading before the class and focus session time on discussing and elaborating on this reading. I will often also set short pieces of written work to be completed after the session so that students can receive feedback from me on their written work.
I take a similar approach with students working towards university admission. With these students I mainly focus on mock interview practice. I also work with students to build up a reading list that follows their interests and goes beyond their course curriculum. This way students can stand out as an individual when they come to apply for university.

Catherine helped me so much! She was always very clear and thorough. My confidence (and grades) wouldn't be where they are today without her !
Cat is a patient, kind and clever educator. She managed to graduate with a First from the University of Cambridge and her experience teaching in schools and inclusive education settings makes her a tutor with valuable and diverse experiences.
Besides it all, she is really funny and I think that's important in the stress-induced environment that education sadly is these days.View more recommendations
