About Kristy
Do you remember being told, "Don't ask why you need to do this," (math formula) "just do it." I certainly remember being told this as a child, and it always irked me. As a teacher, I found out why my teachers never told me "why." They never knew the answer themselves! I have dedicated many years to learning the basic concepts that those formulas are built, and how to best present these concepts to my students. While most elementary math teachers only teach the algorithm, (the formula) I focus first on the foundational math concepts behind the formula, which is why my math students always rocked their standardized math tests!

My lessons are based on the teachings of Li Ping Ma, a world-renowned math scholar who has devoted her life to learning and sharing best practices in math instruction. My techniques in math instruction transition from teaching concepts concretely, then through pictorial representations, before approaching them on the abstract (algorithm) level. My method for teaching problem solving of math word problems has been proven to equip students to successfully solve almost any word problem they encounter. My lessons are especially effective for students in 3rd-5th grades.
