About Jacob
I have been a higher education professional and teacher since completing my first M.A. degree in 2010. Since then, I have taught English composition, literature, and philosophy at the University of Washington and offered private tutoring and mentorship to students of all ages. Much of my work has clustered around the 16 to 20 age group, though I have also worked with children as young as 10 (some with special learning needs) as well as older adults seeking to continue their education, master their language skills, and seek additional certifications.

Hello! I am experienced English and Philosophy instructor with a Ph.D. (ABD, 2019) in English Literature and Language from the University of Washington. I welcome students of all ages, though much of my past work has been with older high school and college-age students. I prize active learning in my classroom, meaning that students have the opportunity to individually engage with the materials and test their own thoughts against texts, materials, and other students in a safe, low-stakes environment that allows them to develop confidence and technique in their critical and creative thinking skills. I insist that learning is most productive when students can feel excitement and interest in what they are doing, and I steer my lectures/discussions toward identifying what particular aspects of learning my students most connect to and building from that foundation.
