About Jessica
I am a public school educator. I have been teaching in the same urban district for over 20 years starting as a paraprofessional. I have taught third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. I have also taught all content areas in an elementary setting and Reading, Language Arts, Drama, College and Careers prep, and Math 7 in a middle school setting. I have a Bachelor's of Elementary Education with an emphasis in intermediate elementary education (4th-6th grades), a Master's in Secondary Education in Math and History, a Master's in Reading Specialist, and I am working on my dissertation for my educational doctorate in Interdisciplinary Leadership. The focus is on teacher retention in a middle school setting as I have been in this position the longest and noticed how frequently staffing changes in a middle school compared to an elementary school. I want to know why this happens and what school leadership can do to prevent teachers leaving the classroom. I have three children ranging in age from 25 to 8. I also have a stepchild who is 16. I have many nieces and nephews, blood-related and chosen family. I am an active member in my community and just want to see people succeed. I also really want people to love reading. My favorite genre is young adult fantasy, though I am not currently reading for fun as of late. I have too much reading for grad school and I really do not have extra time. One day. I do read other genres and can help any student find something to read. I love sports - I coach football and track at the middle school where I teach. I love baseball and this is my favorite time of the year. I always find a team to follow in the World Series if my Washington Nationals do not make it.

I am willing and able to work through homework assignments using Canvas, Schoology, and Google Classroom. I will use existing testing data regarding reading level such as NWEA MAP data or assess student levels if existing data does not exist or is believed to be inaccurate. I will support students where they are and move them to where they should be. We will read books together to foster comprehension and write about what the students have read. I have 20+ years experience teaching students how to read and how to be a better reader. Students will improve their abilities in literacy and improve their academic achievement.
