About Wadey

Hello! I’m Wadey Yaya. Your Partner in Spanish Success & Academic Growth.

Learning a second language in high school is a brilliant opportunity, but it can also feel incredibly overwhelming. Whether your student is trying to make sense of their very first conjugation in Spanish 1, navigating the fast-paced grammar of Spanish 2, or facing the rigorous demands of the AP Spanish Language exam, "I am here to ensure they don't just get through it, but truly excel, and enjoy it!"

As a certified classroom Spanish teacher with a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, my tutoring is backed by years of formal training, school leadership insights, and deep pedagogical expertise. My love for the Spanish language was truly solidified while living and studying in Peru, allowing me to bring rich, authentic cultural context and native-level fluency into every lesson.

Beyond my academic credentials, I am a passionate educator and a Varsity Head Soccer Coach. I understand the unique pressures today's high schoolers face. I don't just teach grammar; I use proven motivational coaching strategies to build resilience, help students overcome academic anxiety, and teach them how to perform under pressure.

Why You Can Feel Confident Partnering with Me?:

1. Elite Pedagogical Expertise: With a Master's in Educational Leadership, I understand the science of learning. I diagnose your student’s unique learning style and adjust my explanations, visual aids, and practice drills to match exactly how their brain processes language.

2. A Coach’s Mindset: I specialize in building confidence. I pride myself on creating a warm, encouraging, yet highly structured environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, adjust, and push past their comfort zones.

3. College Admissions Insight (Bonus Value):** Because I have extensive experience navigating the college admissions process, with a specialized focus on the recruitment path for student-athletes, I understand the big picture. I know how critical maintaining a high GPA and mastering AP exams are for your student's future collegiate goals, and I help them keep their eyes on the prize.

My goal is to take the anxiety out of Sunday night homework, build lasting academic confidence, and turn Spanish class into a source of pride for your student. I look forward to partnering with your family to help your student achieve their highest potential!

As a certified language teacher, my approach to high school Spanish is built on a simple truth: "No one ever became fluent by just memorizing vocabulary lists for a Friday quiz."

Below is a breakdown of how I teach, what a typical session looks like, and how I help students bridge the gap between classroom stress and actual language confidence.

1. My Teaching Method & Techniques

Language acquisition requires a balance of "comprehensible input" (understanding what you hear/read) and "low-stress output" (speaking and writing). I use three core techniques to make this happen:

a. The "Scaffolding" Technique: I break complex grammar concepts (like the dreaded preterite vs. imperfect, or subjunctive triggers) into bite-sized, logical steps. We master one small building block before stacking the next one on top.

b. Active Retrieval Practice: Instead of passively reading notes, we use interactive games, flashcards, and quick-fire speaking prompts to pull the Spanish out of the student’s brain. This builds the muscle memory needed for exams.

c. Targeted AP Frameworks: For AP students, I teach the exact formulas needed to score high on the free-response sections. We break down the "Cultural Comparison" and the "Persuasive Essay" into predictable templates so students never freeze up on test day.

2. A Typical 60-Minute Lesson Plan

Consistency builds confidence. Every session follows a structured, high-energy flow designed to keep high schoolers engaged without burning them out.

0-10 minutes: Warm-Up & Conversational Check- A low-stakes, 100% Spanish conversation about their week, sports, or interests to prime their brain for the language.

10-25 minutes: The "Blocker" Focus - We target the specific homework, grammar point, or AP task they are currently struggling with in school.

25-45 minutes: Active Practice & Application - The student takes the driver's seat. We practice writing, speaking, or tackling AP-style multiple-choice questions together, correcting mistakes in real-time.

45 - 55 minutes: Speaking Drill / Exam Simulation - A rapid-fire verbal drill (for Spanish 1 & 2) or a timed AP simulated conversation to build real-world speed and confidence. |

55-60 minutes: Cool Down & Action Plan - We review what went well, clarify lingering questions, and set 1-2 small, actionable study goals for their school week ahead.

3. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

Unlike a college student who simply speaks Spanish or a general tutor who "does a little of everything," I bring professional classroom experience to the table:

a I Know the Curriculum & Rubrics: Having taught in the classroom, I know exactly how high school teachers structure their tests, what graders look for on AP rubrics, and where students typically trip up.

b. I Teach the "Why," Not Just the "What": I don't just give students the answers to their homework. I teach them the underlying linguistic patterns so they can solve the next ten problems completely on their own.

c. A "Mistake-Friendly" Environment: High schoolers are often terrified of speaking Spanish because they don't want to sound silly in front of their peers. I create a warm, encouraging, 1-on-1 space where making mistakes is celebrated as a necessary step toward fluency.

4. Who These Lessons Are For

I specialize strictly in "High School Spanish" for the following levels:

a. Spanish 1 (Academic/Honors): Best for freshman or sophomores building their foundation. We focus on pronunciation, basic sentence structure, present tense, and school survival skills.

b. Spanish 2/3 (Academic/Honors): Best for students facing the "sophomore/junior slump" of language learning. We tackle past tenses (preterite/imperfect), the subjunctive mood, commands, object pronouns, and transition words.

c. AP Spanish Language & Culture: Best for advanced students aiming for a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam. We focus heavily on the exam’s six thematic units, advanced print/audio synthesis, formal writing, and timed oral presentations.
