About Karen
I’m a trilingual educator with over 15 years of teaching, tutoring, and homeschooling experience across Canada and Hong Kong. I hold a Bachelor of Arts from UBC, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Sunderland, and a TESOL certificate. I am certified across Asia-Pacific and currently pending certification for the provinces of B.C. and A.B. I’ve taught in international, private, and local schools, and I’m familiar with multiple curricula including British Columbia, Alberta, American, British, Australian, and IB. My lessons are structured, personalized, and designed to help students build lasting confidence and skills. I am familiar with curriculum, program, and IEP planning and implementation. Whether you're looking for support for neurodivergent learners, to stay on par, or to get/stay ahead with extended/gifted learning, I have the experience to help you. Fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin (Putonghua), I find joy and have experience working closely with diverse learners and families!

Every student learns differently, and my job is to make sure they feel seen, supported, and confident in how they learn best. Half the battle is motivation and ensuring that students are present. This underpins my goal to make every session engaging, fun, and effective spiced with a little humor and encouragement towards a growth mindset. Lessons and programs will be tailored to meet each student where they are through patience, experience, and clear expectations and structure to help them achieve a sense of pride and reward through effort and practice. A typical lesson flow: Check-in & review – a quick look over what’s been covered, areas of focus short-long term, and what needs practice. Core focus – we explore 1-2 main topics and skills depending on depth of content and lessons duration / focus. Teaching and learning will be explained, modeled with examples and visuals through guided discussion when needed. Active practice – students apply what they’ve learned through targeted exercises with consistent feedback and guidance. Wrap-up & reflection – we end with a takeaway goal or strategy for the week to keep progress steady. Optional learning can be provided if suited. My lessons are ideal for: Grades 1–10: All core subjects (Math, English, Writing, Social Humanities, Sciences) Grades 11–12: Credit course support, diploma exam prep, study coaching, and university planning All levels: Homework support, writing improvement, and executive-functioning skills Advanced learners: Enrichment and independent study planning Transitioning students: Bridging between school systems or preparing for university readiness I love seeing my students grow into independent, motivated learners who gain a sense of ownership in their learning progress. My sessions are structured but flexible, always shaped around what each student truly needs. As well, in providing parents the consistent feedback and communication needed.
