About Emma
I am very attentive to my students’ wants and needs when creating lesson plans. I ask what my students want to focus on be it grammar, vocabulary, accent reduction, or something else entirely. I then make sure to focus on that part of English the most when planning lessons. I also make sure to tailor vocabulary to be specific to my students if they so choose. For example, if a student who works in construction wants to learn vocabulary, I will go over the names of work vehicles, safety equipment, and verbs relevant to their work. Having taught as a volunteer for seven years to diverse groups, I have become attentive to cultural differences in my teaching methods and adjust my lessons accordingly. I am also prompt when I have lessons scheduled. If there is time remaining in the lesson after the lesson plan has ended, I do my best to not waste it and instead use activities to review the lesson. Finally, I should note I am a strong believer in constructive feedback and positive reinforcement; focusing on building up students’ confidence rather than making them feel wrong for any errors.

I have a well-rounded approach to teaching. I include practice in vocabulary, verbs, writing, reading, and pronunciation. If the student needs one area more than the others, I will gladly tailor my lessons.
A typical lesson starts with a warm-up activity. I use a game or other light activity to review what the previous lesson covered. I also use that time to respond to any questions asked in the previous class to ensure they were adequately addressed. Next, we go over the main part of the lesson, be it vocabulary, verbs, writing, etc. Then we’ll do an activity as a follow-up to the lesson. Finally, if there is time left, we’ll do a light review activity. Or I may practice pronunciation using minimal pairs. If the student is ready for informal English, we’ll practice idioms to help the student's English become more natural.
My lessons are for ESL learners from Beginner (above Literacy) to Advanced. I teach inclusion (English-only) classes only. I hope you will join me as we work together to improve your English while having fun.
