About Matthew
As a Chemistry tutor I draw on a wealth of experience gained from my time at The University of Cambridge and The University of Strathclyde. Where i developed a love for the subject particularly when applying it to questions of a large scope such as the chemical origins of life or when applying it to innovative new technologies.
When teaching I like to push my students to think further than the taught theory by asking them to apply it in different chemistry scenarios. I find this not only anchors the theory to a real life process making it more exciting to learn, but also makes the theory more comprehensible as the students have a process which they can picture and think about logically.
The scenarios I ask students to contemplate tend to be too difficult to explain without asking questions. This creates a dialog between myself and the student, making the student more comfortable and confident when working with me.

I have enjoyed teaching chemistry since my final year of high school in which I assisted in running my schools science club. A year later, when starting university, I began teaching chemistry more traditionally as a personal tutor for family friends. Over the last few years I have branched into teaching a variety of students at different levels; from GCSE/national 5 students to first year undergraduate students.
I have now been teaching chemistry for around six years and as such have developed my own tuition style. My style is focused on improving my students ability to gain high marks in exams, but also on generating excitement about chemistry and developing a deeper understanding of chemical processes the scientific method.
To develop this greater interest and understanding I like to try and incorporate real life chemical processes and their applications into my lesson plans. I find this gives the lessons meaning as students can see how what they are learning can be useful. I also find giving these real life examples improves memory of the lessons.
Depending on the level of study and timetable of the student in question I also like to give additional homework to consolidate learning. This homework can vary from simple past paper questions to example questions tailored by myself to the student. I also set additional tasks such as finding real life examples that demonstrate theory they have studied or discussing how they think a real life process may occur just using theory that has been taught in the lesson.

I have had the luck of working with Matthew for the past few months and all I can say is that he is the best tutor you can dream of. Academically, you will learn so much with him. Not only he is a brilliant scientist and academically impeccable, but also the best source of motivation. Matthew will pass you his motivation for chemistry, engage in intellectually-stimulating conversations and make yourself question the world in a completely new way. On the personal, he is passionate, committed, enthusiastic and clear, which are some of the qualities that make him the best Chemistry tutor.
