About Olivia
My name is Olivia and I am 20 years old, currently studying Chemistry at the University of Birmingham. Ever since I was young I've always had a passion for learning, I used to come home from school eager to tell my parents what I'd been taught in class that day. I realised as I grew up that sharing knowledge on subjects I am passionate about was synonymous to tutoring and began one-on-one in-person lessons. I have always built a relationship with my students as I believe this is the only way they will be completely unafraid to ask me as many questions as they want. I've found it so fulfilling to watch the progression of children who perhaps began feeling ashamed of their grades, embarrassed about not keeping up with their peers or who are simply unsatisfied with their level of knowledge and want to exceed the standard they've been set at, become keen and avid learners. I believe knowledge is the most impressive and powerful thing we can acquire and the fact I am in a position to help others achieve this is beyond rewarding.

My approach to tutoring is to tailor my methods around each individual student I teach. I believe every person learns differently, a method such as mnemonic devices or flashcards may work perfectly for some people but for others, testing their knowledge through practice questions is the only way they can learn. Therefore, to an extent, my technique in teaching is student-led. I have always strongly encouraged my students to speak out, ask questions or tell me if they feel my wording or explanations are confusing. A typical lesson (60 minutes) would usually involve the introduction of a topic and an in-depth discussion about its theory before collaboratively working through examples. I use this time to pinpoint gaps in my students' knowledge and, if there are any present, I will explain the same concept through a different approach until both I and my student are confident in their understanding. I received 9s in all of my GCSEs which included maths, biology, chemistry and physics before going to sixth form to study the aforementioned subjects (minus physics) and achieved As in all three. I began tutoring at 16 and have had 4 students consistently since that I gained through word-of-mouth. I teach online from ages 11-16 but specialise in GCSE preparation. I also have experience working with children with learning difficulties.
