About Steven
Chess has been part of my life since 1997. I competed as a tournament player in high school, and over the years I've developed a deep understanding of what separates strong players from beginners — and more importantly, how to close that gap.
I spent five years teaching the chess club at Lincoln Elementary in Springfield, OH, which gave me something most tutors don't have: real classroom experience with brand-new players. I know how to break down complex ideas without losing the depth that makes chess beautiful.
My teaching philosophy is grandmaster-inspired but beginner-focused. I don't just teach rules — I teach you how to think. Piece activity, tactical patterns, opening principles, and a move-by-move thinking process that works at every level.
I tutor both children and adults online, over the board. Whether you're picking up a chess piece for the first time or you're stuck at the same level and want to break through, my lessons are built around where you are and where you want to go.

Discourse is the key in learning chess. Taking the language of chess - en passant, castle, skewer, Nf3, etc. - and making it second nature is essential. My degree is in English so I have a talent of making the complicated understandable.
A typical lesson plan with me is not so typical. It's all about you or your young learner. I take the desire that a student has and fan it into a flame and from there to a conflagration. I have an hour each lesson to turn your curiosity into how a grandmaster thinks. We look at patterns and principal, not rote memorization.
I teach beginners, children and adults, over the board. Playing online is good practice. But playing with real chess sets is crucial to maintain spatial awareness. So I do require you to have your own chess set. No clock is needed. If you're 13 or younger, a chesskids.com free membership is recommended for practice. Ages 14 and up, lichess.com is recommended for practice.
