Hi everyone! My name is Ettore Marchi and I hold a Master of Music (MMus) in Historical Performance from the Royal College of Music, where I am currently studying for an Artist Diploma (Level 8). Prior to my studies at the RCM, I graduated with Distinction in guitar from Conservatorio Statale G.B. Martini in Bologna and in lute from Conservatorio I.S.S.M. F. Vittadini in Pavia. I am an experienced guitar and lute tutor as I have been teaching to all skill and age ranges at several music schools and associations for over 15 years. I am now based in London and would love to share the beauty of music with you. Students of all ages and levels are welcome to my classes. Both the teaching method and the lesson length will adapt to everyone's needs and skills. I specialise in the classical guitar repertoire but I am open to all kinds of musical genres. If you are fascinated by Renaissance and Baroque music for early plucked instruments such as lute, theorbo, baroque guitar, etc., I would love to introduce you to this surprising world. See you in class!

Find out more about Ettore

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I started learning to play the guitar at the age of 8 and immediately developed a great passion. My motivation for the guitar grew when I first decided to learn the classical guitar at the age of 12. When I was 20, I first listened to a lute concert and fell in love with early music. My favourite instruments are the classical guitar and the lute.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Classical, rock, traditional and early music are my favourite genres. I very much like Pink Floyd and could listen to them all day.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most challenging and rewarding course I can give a music student is to help them develop a personal musical taste and independence in making musical choices.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think any instrument has its difficulties, but If I had to choose, I would say the lute. Its mastery is very hard due to the high number of strings, the weak volume and its challenging contrapuntal repertoire.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success are consistency and regular practice. Shorter practice sessions every day are much more effective than a long session once a week. Playing can be fun, but it is also important to be willing to put in time, effort and patience.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

First of all, I would love to meet David Gilmour because I think he is one of the greatest electric guitarists ever. The second artist is Paco de Lucía because I really want to ask him about the secrets of the classical guitar. Lastly, I'd love to meet the members of Inti-Illimani and discuss their fascinating traditional music.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I like quoting the great composer Robert Schumann. In his 1845 Album fur die Jungend op. 68, he wrote Rules and Maxims for Young Musicians, one of which has been my motto since music school: 'Nothing right can be accomplished in art without enthusiasm'.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am an experienced and motivated teacher, and love sharing my passion for music. My teaching method is tailored to suit each student's needs, interests and skills. My lessons are specially designed to explore each student's artistic potential and boost it.
