About Anna
Hi! My name is Anna, and I am a second year student at the University of St Andrews studying Classics. My degree incorporates Classical Studies (both of Roman and Greek societies, and including literature and art, as well as cultural aspects like religion), Latin, and Ancient Greek. I have always been mad about the ancient world, particularly the position of women and the literature that so inspires our own, so Classics really is a dream come true to study for me, especially at one of the UK's top universities for the subject!
I have been tutoring part-time for about four years now, starting off local from 2016-2018 with a student in my hometown, and then branching out to take part in the Coronavirus Tutoring Initiative. I greatly enjoy tutoring, and so cannot wait to have the opportunity to teach you!
In terms of my examinations, I have taken GCSEs, obtaining 6 A*s and 4 As (A*s in English Language, English Literature and Classical Civilisation, and an A in Latin), an AS-Level in English Language (obtaining an A), and A-Levels in Classical Civilisation (A), Latin (A) and English Literature (A*). In my first and second years at university, I finished on the Dean's List, obtaining Firsts. I also was recently awarded the Blair Prize for excellence in Ancient Greek.
When tutoring, I hope to expand a student's interest in their subject beyond the common area, incorporating other texts and aspects that may interest them and allowing them to develop their own favourite parts of their subject, rather than keeping them too restricted by the curriculum.
With weekly assessment through perhaps a translation for Latin, or a passage of analysis for English, I will structure my lessons entirely around the student's own interest and desire of how to work. However, a general set-up for me tends to be: a beginning task to assess previous understanding; a main task; and then a system at the end that I like to call my traffic-light system. At the end of each session, I will ask my student their understanding on the topic, and they will give me a colour - green for 'I understand completely and could explain this to someone else', yellow for 'I need some more help with this', and red for 'let's take another look at this'. I believe this is a fantastic way to keep the student directly involved in assessing their own learning, and it helps me assist in understanding.
I am a strong believer in fostering a student's own interpretations of both translations and texts, so I truly believe it is important for me to be a guiding presence in tutoring rather than a prescriptive tutor giving the answers. If you enjoy independent discussion and thinking, I'm the one for you!
