About Deborah

I love working with students one on one and in small groups on reading and thinking critically and writing clearly and persuasively. I specialize in revision: getting the words down is just the beginning. I can teach you how to diagnose and improve your own writing. I also have experience helping students who are writing master's and doctoral theses as well as teaching students to write admission essays for college, graduate school, and law school.

About the lesson

I start with where the student is right now, because no one can learn to be a good writer overnight. We learn to read for argument and nuances. This leads to deeper thinking; there is no good writing without effective thinking. Writing assignments that tap into creativity get my students engaged. From there I give helpful feedback to take the writing to the next level. This is a process; it takes time and dedication. I teach proven lessons on intros, conclusions, thesis development, essay structure, paragraphing and transitions, using and citing sources, revision, and editing. I also help students learn to research in online databases and learn to cite the sources correctly. These lessons can help high school students preparing for college writing as well as those already in college. For advanced undergraduates and graduate students, I can help you work on the conventions (customs such as using passive voice or not, level of formality, citation systems, etc.) of writing in your academic discipline. Note that I will be your TEACHER, not your proofreader or editor. If you are willing to put in the time and work, I can teach you to diagnose and edit your own writing yourself!
