About Josephine
I am a classically-trained flutist holding degrees in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University (Master of Music, 2025) and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Bachelor of Music, 2020). I have been extremely lucky to have studied with flutists Lorna McGhee and Alexa Still, and it is my goal to pass down their tradition of gracious, healthy, and productive learning to every one of my students.
I am a winner of the National Flute Association's Masterclass Performers Competition, recipient of Domaine Forget's Woodwind Excellence Award, and recipient of the Fine Arts Award in Flute from the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Recent orchestral performances have included concerts with the Civic Orchestra of Los Angeles and Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra. As I near two decades of flute playing, I've developed a holistic and physically-informed methodology to playing the flute that I am excited to share with you!

As an educator, I've taught as a Secondary Lesson Teacher at Oberlin, substitute teaching staff at the Steranka Flute Studio LLC, and privately since 2018 to all ages and skill levels. I've also led sectionals and taught in group settings through programs such as the River City School of Brass, UCLA Lab School, and Glendale Youth Orchestra. Previously, I helped develop an interactive teaching concert at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh as part of the Azure Family Concert Series.
Due to my background as a performance librarian, I am precise about each student's individual learning needs and cater my lesson plans and practice strategies. I facilitate open communication in each teacher-student relationship and am always eager to discuss any flute-related concerns or ideas you may have!
My teaching philosophy is heavily based in making sure students are comfortable playing in their bodies and prioritizing both mental and physical performance health. I'm here to support you - your musical goals will always be the focus of our lesson.

I had the chance to take (regrettably only) a few lessons with Josephine when she substituted my regular teacher. She was by far my favorite substitute and I was looking forward to see her again. As a teacher she has been "ideal" - at least for me - caring, helpful, supportive. She picked up on minute technical deficiencies and helped to fix them.
Her most outstanding quality is that she has an exceptional sound on the flute and she could help me to improve my sound. If I had to move to LA, no doubt I would try to become a regular student of hers.
Josephine is a highly-skilled and generous teacher! She explains concepts clearly and creates a welcoming environment for players of any level. I would highly recommend working with her!
As a long-time friend of Josephine, I’ve witnessed her growth as a musician and teacher since high school through post-graduate. She is always super enthusiastic and friendly to her peers and is patient, knowledgable and engaging with her students. I highly recommend Josephine to help guide your musical journey :)
I first encountered Josephine as my Graduate Assistant at Carnegie Mellon University in the Fall of 2023, and subsequently hired her as a member of my private studio's substitute teaching staff. Josephine is exceptional at everything she does, including teaching. My students adored her from day one! Josephine is a kind, enthusiastic, and engaging teacher. She is the type of teacher from whom a flutist of any age and level can receive valuable wisdom and instruction. She is a self-starter, a born leader, and a wonderful colleague. I highly recommend her!
