About Calvin
I'm a Brooklyn-based jazz baritone saxophonist, and recent graduate of the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of music. My early jazz education took place in Seattle, WA, where I played in the internationally recognized Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, and competed twice in the Essentially Ellington competition. I have had opportunities to study with acclaimed musicians including Gary Smulyan, Ralph Lalama, Jon Faddis, Pete Malinverni, Dawn Clement, Joel Frahm, Matt Wilson, and many others. I'm eager to share what I've learned with saxophonists and woodwind players of all levels.

My teaching aims to help students find and dive into music that they love. I individualize instruction according to each student's goals and needs, informed by my experience over the past decade playing the saxophone and studying with world-class musicians.
Regardless of a student's goals, having fun with music and developing a good relationship with the instrument are core priorities of my teaching. Beyond that, if I had to pick one skill that is most essential for playing any woodwind well, it would be developing a strong and controlled air stream. This is essential to everything: producing a good sound, starting and stopping notes cleanly, playing in the extreme ranges of the instrument, and more. There are no cheat codes to playing the saxophone, but good air is about as close to one as you can get.
I recommend that students take one-hour lessons on a weekly basis. This allows enough time to address several different topics in each lesson, and ensures regular enough feedback to keep a student on the right track in their individual practice. I recognize that such a schedule might not be realistic for everyone, for any number of reasons, so I do offer 45 minute and 30 minute long lessons, and I am happy to teach on a semi-monthly basis.

Details
I charge a $10 travel fee for lessons taught at a student's home to cover transportation costs and time. Students living within the 11214 zip code are exempt from the travel fee. Due to my location and schedule, I am not able to teach in-person at a student's home outside of the following zip codes: 11214, 11228, 11209, 11223, 11224, 11204, 11219, 11220, 11232, 11218, 11215, 11217, 11201, 11231, 11238, 11216, 11213, 11225. If you live elsewhere, I'd be happy to teach in-person at my apartment in Bensonhurst, BK, or virtually on Zoom!
