About Hannah

Originally from the Highlands, I am now based in Glasgow and work as a theatre director alongside my passion for teaching.

Having sat my own exams not that long ago in 2019, I am familiar with the difficulties many students face when sitting exams in essay-based subjects like English and Drama. I help students build their confidence in English by supporting them to identify weak areas and build on their existing skills to improve them. Whether you struggle to break down big chunks of text, get your thoughts into a sentence, or explain the effect of a simile, I will work with you to find learning techniques that make sense to you. I have worked with numerous neurodivergent students, and have many people in my own life with autism/ADHD, so I know that every person needs their own unique approach to a subject, and I will work with you to find yours.

Outside of teaching, I love films, playing music and cooking.

About the lesson

I am an English tutor from the Highlands of Scotland with over five years combined experience tutoring English and Drama. My previous students have seen marked improvements in exam results, overall literacy, and interest in English as a result of my tutoring. I teach secondary students up to GCSE level (AQA/Pearson exam boards) or Advanced Higher level (SQA exam board). Lessons are 50-60 minutes long, and hosted on Google Meets.

My teaching style is patient and focused on the student's needs, and I have experience teaching students with dyslexia and autism/ADHD. I am skilled in responding to individual learning styles and identifying gaps in knowledge. I have always been patient and understanding of the difficulties students face in essay-based subjects, and am able to focus on increasing the student’s understanding of useful techniques in order to build their competence in academic writing at the secondary level. I also teach reading strategies to help students break down large chunks of text, and use tailored activities aimed at increasing understanding and analysis skills.

I have a first class BA(Hons) in Drama and Contemporary Performance from Manchester School of Theatre and an MLitt (Distinction) in Theatre Studies from the University of Glasgow. I have been tutoring English since 2023, and before that I was the director of Millburn Academy Drama Club and assistant tutor for LAMDA Grades 1-5 Acting at Eden Court Theatre (2018-2020). I have worked with esteemed tutoring companies including Tutorful, Clever Tutors, and Edumentors providing high quality one-to-one English and Drama lessons. I have experience tutoring English Literature and Language for the AQA and Pearson Edexcel exam boards, Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson IGCSE, as well as having taught Scottish National 5 and Higher.
