About Marty
I always liked math, and it was often a good friend -- making other subjects make sense and finding reflection in the world around me. I try to impart some of that insight and enthusiasm. Although I have written for a living, and produced a small mountain of video and new media (some of it pioneering), I come back to math -- using it, instructing it -- as an old friend. My nonprofit work in recent years has led me to a deeper understanding of many paths to understanding mathematical concepts. I've developed games, models and a wide array of multisensory tools to help any learner grasp fundamental ideas of number manipulation, algebra and geometry. I believe that learning is a joyous process and working with me can be a blast.

First thing I do is tune in to the learning: is this an auditory learner, or visual? Does this person like to handle a model or read an explanation in text? What's the problem? Where's the block? For an early-grade learner, it could be fractions. That's what derails many kids by 4th grade. Or if it's a junior high student, maybe exponents are a mystery. Proportions are key to being able to solve equations and make progress in algebra. I quickly find the roadblock. Then based upon the sensory preference of the learner and their cognitive style, I shape a lesson that digs a tunnel through the block. In geometry, almost everything can be illustrated. Geometry (the word) after all means "earth measure" -- it's a very concrete thing. But sadly textbooks make it abstract and frequently confusing. That's a solvable problem. Math isn't mysterious, and it doesn't need to be painful. In fact, it's a source of delight and revelation! I communicate that joy.
