About Winston
Hi, my name is Winston! I'm a PhD student at Duke University studying civil engineering and applied math. I've been tutoring for most of my academic career with experience working with students from middle school all the way to college undergrad. One of my long-term goals through my PhD is to eventually be a lecturer, so I take every opportunity to teach very seriously. I am always committed to my students, and I firmly believe education should always be fun, engaging, and rewarding. Furthermore, as an engineer, I like to think of more abstract STEM topics in terms of application, giving me unique and grounded perspectives on why we want to learn many of the topics we face in school. I've always been enthusiastic about the topics that I teach, and I always strive to inspire students to want to learn more.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy making music, playing basketball, and cooking.
I look forward to getting to know you soon!

From my many years of tutoring, I know that teaching isn't a one size fits all model, and that lessons work best when they are tailored to the student. Thus, as a tutor, I will work with you to create a learning plan that suits your needs and sets you up for success. In our first lesson, we will:
- Create a long term individual development plan for overall teaching goals
- Design a syllabus and teaching schedule based on individual student needs
- Highlight particularly challenging subject matter to target
From there, we will work at a pace that suits your goals. This will typically be a prepared lecture followed by practice problems and/or homework help. However, I am very flexible in my tutoring and teaching style, and will tailor lesson structures to best suit individual learning needs.
As a PhD student in engineering and applied math, I have a great deal of theoretical depth and background knowledge that I feel helps give a complete picture of why we want to learn different topics, and also how these topics connect with each other. My approach emphasizes fundamental understanding, which I believe is key to succeeding both in the short and the long term. As a tutor, I am committed to your individual goals and fundamentally believe that learning is always possible, and always has room to be fun and engaging.
My teaching will be remote for students in middle school, high school, or as college undergraduates. I specialize in mathematics and chemistry at all levels, but am also qualified to teach high school physics and biology.
