About Sophia Mae
Being someone who loves people and has done a lot of extracurriculars in her life, I connect conversationally with all ages, whether it's just through the shared human experience, or through a sport we've both played, or a book we both love!
Speaking of sports, though I played fast-pitch softball for eight years and loved backyard football, I am currently doing a multitude of martial arts styles and have been for seven years, having started competing just in the last three.
Additionally, I am an avid lover of musicals, both from Broadway (Hadestown) and Disney's renaissance era (The Princess and the Frog), which also tells you I love folk and jazz music with all my heart. As an English major, I can't forget to say that I also love to read of course, but for a handful of smaller fun facts, I also enjoy cooking, drumming, and dancing.
No matter what you're into, I'm sure we'll find something in common-- or, better yet, you might just teach me about something completely new! I do love to learn myself, after all. :)

In my years of tutoring, I have developed curated strategies designed to help my students learn how to write based off of what they are already interested in or good at, harnessing metaphors that relate what they love to writing and English grammar, teaching them something new in a seemingly familiar and nuanced way; my most popular success has been with my "English in equations" and "English for athletes" strategies.
My method doesn't start with a book, it starts with the student. I love getting to know my students not only to show them that they're seen and understood, but also to better tailor their writing exercises, mnemonic devices, and drafting strategies.
I also don't just want to lecture my students, but have a genuine discussion with them in each lesson. Learning isn't just consumption, it's production; my standard lessons consist of a sandwich approach, where I begin with a small exercise where they write something based off of a student-centered prompt that I create.
Then we discuss the new content for the day within three parts: the information section, interaction section, and finally, the initiation section.
After that, we add in the new writing/grammar element into the piece that the student wrote at the beginning of class, bringing the lesson full circle and giving the student something concrete to be proud of and show improvement.
Throughout all my lessons, I prioritize an upbeat and safe environment where all of my students are uniquely encouraged. Additionally, I maintain a personal habit of keeping a log of all of my students' progress and growth in order to constantly be tweaking my strategies and better understanding my students.
Education should not be neutralized, it should be specialized. I not only believe this, but actively practice it with each new student I receive; you deserve to learn according to how you learn best, and I would be more than happy to start that journey with you here. Let's get started today!
