About McKenna
As a college student myself, I have a deep understanding of students' needs in balancing help from a tutor and taking a lasting understanding outside the sessions. I have experience working with learners at different levels, making my focus on breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps. My academic experience includes two AP math courses in my high school career as well as peer-tutoring for other math students at that time. In the subject of math, I believe that practice problems are a crucial aspect of learning the material. A typical lesson plan for a section begins with students trying a problem to have a baseline. Then going through the problem step-by-step to learn the correct processes. After, I offer a set of practice problems that allows the students to practice the new procedures taught. While I encourage them to attempt it by themselves, I watch with support and light guidance along the way. We then go over the problems together and work to explain any mistakes. My teaching method is very encouraging and based on growing the student's ability to recognize what type of problem they have and how to solve it. My lessons are best for elementary-middle school math as well as high school algebra.
