About Heather

I am known as Ms. Parker, sometimes mom, when my students forget they are not at home. I am a huge lover of children and animals. I have a special knack with children with disabilities. I have a lot of training and 27+ years of experience in special education, specifically autism. I try to make learning fun, because school was so difficult for me. If I can earn a bachelor's degree, two credentials and an autism certification anyone can. What matters is not that you learn differently, what matters is that you learn. It may take you longer, it may be harder for you, you may watch your brother or sister barely study while you fight for every good grade. It is incredibly frustrating, but because I have been where you are, I understand and as long as you are willing to try I will fight this battle to learn with you.

About the lesson

As a teacher of special education I have taught children to read and also helped with their comprehension. There is a program called Orton Gillingham that I have some training in and plan to pursue more of. I believe in making reading fun, so I play a lot of word games with the kids to teach them sight words. I tell stories to help them understand a concept. For instance, instead of telling them that the e at the end of the word is silent, I tell a story about it. Something along the lines of, "That bossy E, he is sooo bossy he's always telling everyone to say their name, but then he says nothing. What nerve!" It makes it fun, the kids laugh and instead of memorizing a boring fact, they remember a funny story. I believe in teaching in a variety of ways so I use music, videos, games, visuals to teach instead of standing at the front of the room lecturing. I use similar methods to teach math, science or history. I myself have dyslexia, but was just diagnosed during my Orton Gillingham training two years ago and ADHD. School was a struggle always difficult, but my teachers loved me because I tried so hard. My passion is getting struggling kids to believe in themselves. I am also looking into becoming a special education advocate.
