About Dan
Character: Patient, understanding, down-to-earth and knowledgeable. Supportive and encouraging with great communication skills. I have had over 4 years working with young people. As a junior and senior I volunteered as a math tutor teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry. I also taught guitar to grades 2-5 for 3 years. I graduated with a 3.93 average, summa cum laude from the Ivy League College, The University of Pennsylvania. Advanced Placement in Calculus. Distinctions in my sophomore and junior years at the University of Pennsylvania. Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society member. When I retired from video and film production, I turned my attention to helping young people succeed, in K-5. I get great satisfaction watching my students grow and achieve those "aha" moments. I have often been told that one of my most helpful skills is making difficult concepts easy to understand. There are always multiple approaches to tutoring and teaching math concepts. I can teach your child the tricks of the trade and together we can watch your child succeed. I have two grown children, a dog and am an avid songwriter. Just finished one today.

What kind of technology is involved in online tutoring? All you need is a reasonably high-speed Internet connection and either a desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone. We'll be working in Zoom with math examples that one can write on and answer.
How is a typical tutoring session structured? First, we might spend a few minutes talking about how the student's week is going and how they are doing in math class. Are they able to keep up with new assignments? Any difficulties? Do they feel like they’re catching onto concepts more easily?
Over the next ten minutes or so, we might go over any homework I have assigned to ensure we are all caught up before going on to new material. I'll be assigning about an hour of homework unless the parent has a strong objection to it. I think it's essential for the best progress.
Next, we’ll get into the main stretch of the session, which might last 45 minutes. Most importantly, we’ll see if the student is having any difficulties with current homework and assignments. Very often, this will be the material that makes up the bulk of the tutoring session. Or we may go onto a new topic I have prepared for the session. In this segment of the lesson the student will be as active as possible, answering as many questions as he or she can.
But how will I know what new topic area is the most important to introduce? It may be new material or it may be older material that has not yet been mastered. Such problem areas can continue to hold up a student's progress in the future. So how will I know what these areas are and what we should study next?
In your student's first homework assignment, we'll conduct an assessment using IXL's famous algorithm. It's very precise. The assessment takes about 60 minutes and there's no pressure involved. I just want to find out what your child knows about math, and what grade level he or she is operating at in areas such as Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Algebra, Measurement and Geometry.
This assessment will give me a very accurate picture of how your child is grasping all areas of math. And as time goes by, the assessment automatically updates itself as your student advances so you can see their progress. I'll also send a report to parents weekly letting you know what we have studied.
For example, let's assume that your child is in Fourth grade. In the IXL assessment they may score a 4.5 in Numbers and Operations showing them to have right between a Fourth and Fifth grade mastery of that area. They may score higher or lower in other areas. For instance, a score of 4.1 in Fractions in the middle of Fourth grade shows a need to concentrate on fractions. Lots of scores above 4.5 show an opportunity to advance toward the next grade level and perhaps beyond.
In winding down the lesson we’ll take 5 minutes to talk about the future, and help your student set goals for the next week. This is also a time when parents may want to have some input or questions about the session. Of course, parents are always invited to attend the entirety of any tutoring session.

Many years ago, Dan taught me everything there is to know about video editing and production. He is a very thorough and patient teacher. I was able to use the skills he taught me as a foundation for a successful and fulfilling career. I count myself blessed to have a lifelong friend and mentor in Dan.
Dan is one of the smartest people I know. We grew up together and have been lifelong friends. Dan works hard and really cares about people. One of the special things about him is his ability to share his knowledge in a way that makes things easy to understand. As a tutor, he will ensure not only that his students learn the material, but that they understand the underlying concepts so their knowledge can be applied. He is very patient, and he has a great sense of humor which will help to make tutoring sessions enjoyable for all of his students.
Mr. Sperling helped me when I was struggling with long division and multiplying fractions. Even though I was in the gifted program, I was falling behind and would not have caught up without his help! I ended up with an A in my class!
Dan is a diligent, kind-hearted, multi-talented person of high moral integrity and exceptional character. He always goes above and beyond, not only for his friends, but also for his students and supervisors alike. He is very proficient in mathematics.
I've worked with Dan in various endeavors over the years.
Dan is a true professional - whip smart and detail oriented.
More than that, he embodies the key attributes of the best teachers: patience, kindness and clarity.View more recommendations
